Valerie Bertinelli’s New Cookbook, Valerie’s Home Cooking
Whether you’re a Valerie Bertinelli fan or you just like to cook, you’ll definitely enjoy Valerie’s new cookbook, Valerie’s Home Cooking: More than 100 Delicious Recipes to Share with Friends and Family. It’s a winner on both counts; it’s a fun glimpse into Valerie’s life through her kitchen as well as being a nice cookbook with a wide variety of recipes.

Many of us first got to know Valerie back in the 1970s when she broke into celebrity in the sitcom One Day at a Time. Nowadays we can find this Golden Globe winning actress and best-selling author on the Food Network starring in her own cooking show, Valerie’s Home Cooking. If you’ve never seen it, I can recommend it as a show that will entertain you while you’re picking up some great ideas for cooking in your own home.
Her writing is like her smile, honest and inviting. She writes about her cooking roots, how she came to know and love the ingredients and recipes she uses, about her family and friends, and how she’s inspired by traveling and by restaurant dishes (both good and bad, what to try and what not to do). She welcomes us into her beautiful kitchen—the introduction to the book is called “Come on into my kitchen,” and there, she writes things such as “To know me, in fact, is to spend time with me in the kitchen.” About the recipes in the book, she writes, “All of them share two ingredients that are essential to me: heart and soul.”
Although Valerie is very present throughout the book, it is really about the food. Here are a few of the recipes you’ll find in Valerie’s Home Cooking:
* Breakfast: Slow-Cooker Granola; Egg-in-a-Bagel Hole; Cherry-Coconut Scuffins
* Home-style recipes: Tuna Noodle Casserole with Potato Chip Topping; Chicken Potpie; Hamburger Helpa
* Fancier recipes: Chicken à la King Crêpes; Peppered Beef Tenderloin; Lobster BLTs
* Desserts: Lemon Icebox Cake; Cherry Cheesecake Pizza Pie; Homemade Cannoli
* Adult beverages: Watermelon Margaritas; Key Lime Martini; Valerie’s Irish Coffee with Lemon-Vanilla Whipped Cream
Seriously, that’s just a sampling of the recipes that jumped out at me. There are recipes for snacks, appetizers, sandwiches, lunches, salads, pasta, side dishes, baked goods—what a selection! And it’s all presented with a big helping of Valerie, from the photos of her throughout the book to her stories about the food, her family, and herself.
If you didn’t know and like Valerie Bertinelli before reading and cooking from Valerie’s Home Cooking, you certainly will afterwards.
