Shelly’s Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe
My family enjoys a good homemade apple crisp and I’ve been using the same recipe for over 25+ years to make it. It’s one of those classic, old-fashioned recipes that was handed down to me by my now deceased mother-in-law. Sometimes we enjoy it just “warm” out of the oven and at other times we will serve it chilled (from the refrigerator) with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top.
Shelly’s Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe
4 cups chopped Granny Smith apples
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup quick oats (oatmeal)
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup butter, melted
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Place chopped and peeled Granny Smith apples into the bottom of a baking dish. I like to use a deep-dish pie dish when I make it. However, it will also fit into a 9″ by 9″ square baking dish too. Sprinkle lemon juice over-the-top of the chopped apple pieces.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl…combine together the light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, all-purpose flour, quick oats and salt. Place butter into a microwave-safe measuring cup and melt in the microwave (about 15 seconds). Pour the melted butter into the flour mixture and stir until the mixture is combined together and crumbly. Use your hands or a large spoon, spread the crumbly mixture across the top of the prepared apples.
Place baking dish into a preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until done. The apples will be fork tender and the crumble mixture will be lightly browned. Remove from oven and let sit in the baking dish for 5 minutes before serving. It can be served warm or chilled from the refrigerator, plain or with vanilla ice cream on top.
