We have a large covered back porch that faced our backyard and is close to our swimming pool. When we entertain, we like to sit out on the porch and entertain or we’ll all gather in our swimming pool if it’s summertime.
The back porch has 4 wooden pillars that just looked really plain. Hubby gave them a nice coat of white paint and then put on the clear outdoor sealer to help preserve the wood. Even though the new paint job looked nice, they still needed some type of pizzazz.
After browsing for some ideas online I found some unfinished wooden decorative brackets that reminded me of wooden wheels. I think they’re meant to mimic wagon wheels, but since I decorate in a beach & coastal theme…I thought they could also resemble ship wheel’s too.
We ordered six of them (they’re inexpensive) and once they arrived…we got busy. We sprayed each wooden bracket with two coats of outdoor white matte-finish paint, letting it dry for 2 hours in-between each coat. We then left them dry overnight. Since they’re made out of wood, you’ll want to seal them. We used a clear acrylic spray sealer that we picked up at our local “home supply” type of store. We gave them two coats of the clear sealer.
Luckily for us the brackets came pre-drilled with holes. We supplied our own 2 1/2″ long screws and hubby mounted them on each side of the porch pillar. This took him a total of 10 minutes to get them all hung up.
Here’s how this DIY Home Improvement Project Worked Out:
6 unfinished wooden brackets at $6.00 each = $36.00
2 cans outdoor white spray paint at $3.00 each = $6.00
1 can outdoor clear spray sealer at $4.50 each = $4.50
For less than $50.00 and for 2 days of time (mainly waiting for the paint and sealer to dry between coats), we updated our back porch pillars and added some pizzazz to them. I’m quite happy with how it turned. In the spring we’re going to do it again using different decorative brackets on one of our front porches too!

I agree that the porch pillars look much nicer now. I love how you were able to decorate them for less than $50.
It is amazing how these change to entire look of the pillar. I also really like that amazon price thank you for sharing I love home improvement stuff like this that are affordable.
That’s a very clever way of sprucing up your porch. I think they look like ship’s wheels.
I reeally like this. In our town there are bunches of houses with the frills like this. Ours was meant to have more butover the years things were changed, I can see the pillars on he now enclosed front porch.
I like how it does look like a wagon wheel or a ships wheel yet is nicely decorative.
