Important Tips for Effective Plumbing Maintenance

September 23, 2017 by Sam H.

Most people don’t think about the maintenance of their homes’ plumbing system. Once they are in the house, that’s it, until something breaks down and they need an emergency repair. The various drains and pipes used for plumbing are made to last a long time, but that does not mean that they do not need to be taken care of regularly. If this is not done, they will age too quickly and over time, they will cost you a lot more in parts and repairs.

It’s important to ensure that you get qualified plumbers to keep your plumbing in tip top shape through the years through regular maintenance. Maintenance should be done once every year. The process is more than just looking to see if there is corrosion or leaking. It includes checking out the appliances that are used every day and which suffer a lot of stress throughout the year. This means that your water heater will be inspected as part of the maintenance check.

If you suffer a sewer line or water line failure, the consequences can be devastating. In order to avoid any such problems since they tend to cause major damage and require costly repairs, regular maintenance is important. It will help you catch the small problems that arise and prevent larger problems in the future. It is a good idea to also buy a water alarm that can alert if you feel that there is a potential leak source somewhere in the home.

Important Tips for Effective Plumbing Maintenance

What Does the Maintenance Check Entail?

When it comes to plumbing maintenance, the contractor will look at the faucets, drains, toilets, water heater, appliances, shut-off valves, sump pumps, supply line and washing machines. He will be looking for blockages, leaks and corrosion. Once the visit is over, your plumbing contractor will give you several suggestions for things that need to be repaired and will also provide professional advice on how to prevent sewer and water damage. Professionals such as Portland emergency plumbing can help diagnose, solve and repair any problems that you have.

By keeping up with routine maintenance, you will build a great relationship with the plumber and in the event of a plumbing emergency, you will be prepared. By taking care of your plumbing, you will extend the life of pipes, faucets and all other attachments, prevent leaks, and in the long term avoid repairs that could drain you financially.

Tips for Maintaining Your Plumbing

Most people do not think of how they can take care of the pipes that move water from one place to another in the home, but there are certain things you can do to ensure the longevity of your plumbing as follows:

• Do not use chemical products to clear your drain. Clogged drains tend to be one of the most common problems, but using chemical drain cleaners tends to erode drain pipes. The best option is to have a plumber Central Coast (or one more relevant to your location) come out and snake your drain.

• Pressure reduction – Most people love the high pressure, especially in the bathroom, but it tends to put additional stress on your pipes, which can lead to a leak.

• Use soft water – Hard water affects the lifespan of your plumbing because the minerals corrode the plumbing.

• Clear the septic tank and sewer lines – Make sure that they are snaked out after every few years. It is also good to pump out the tank every 3 to 5 years.

Great info. I like how you do mention chemical cleaners. They have a number of different things you can now use to clear drains, We have one of the pressure plungers that basically uses air to force the clog. Another tip is never ever put grease nor oil down your drain. Like arteries is clogs especially in colder weather!

This is really good information. We live with a septic system and I read so much about what to do and not do. Thank you for reminding all of us about the maintenance.
