Starting with the basics, including finding & choosing stones as well as tools & materials, the guide offers a variety of techniques, including painting stones with colors or inks, painting on natural stone, and sealing the finished work. Projects range from simple to advanced and include suggestions for indoor & outdoor display, as well as instructions on how to style wearable objects such as pendants. A complete section of templates provides motifs for every project as well as ample inspiration for developing your own designs.

My Thoughts: I love to craft and enjoy a slew of different crafting mediums. I’ve dabbled in decorative painting before, but never jumped into it full steam ahead. Rock painting (stone painting) has always interested me. Last summer the Princess and I painted lady bug garden rocks and shared that project here on the blog. As soon as I saw this new “The Art of Stone Painting” book, I knew it would be a great craft book to add to our collection.

I was hoping to get started on a few of the projects right away, but our weather has been terrible, so I haven’t gotten out to find some smooth stones just yet. I guess I’ll have to wait until there is no snow or ice on the ground to find them. I did find some that I could purchase at a local store, but they were too small in size for these projects. Sigh. Come on Springtime!

Anyway, I read this book cover-to-cover and I know this is definitely something I can do. The author has everything broken down in easy-to-read chapters, step-by-step instructions and most of the designs are easy enough for a beginner to do. Plus, the author gives you ideas on how to express your own creativity with your own designs and I’m already inspired to try out a few of my ideas too!

I think The Art of Stone Painting is a fantastic book! A great book for beginners and for those who are more advanced. There are designs in this book for every skill level and for every taste. Once our winter weather clears up, I’ll be heading to the river for a few river walks to collect some smooth stones.
