Homemade Classic Meatloaf Recipe

January 2, 2017 by Shelly

Homemade Classic Meatloaf RecipeEvery month I make a homemade meatloaf. For me and my family, it’s comfort food. When it comes to meatloaf, I have 4 different recipes that I rotate around and will use depending on my mood and appetite. One of our favorite recipes is the Colman’s Classic Meatloaf which I’m sharing with all of you today.

Note: I use my own Italian seasoned dry bread crumbs that I personally make. In addition to their recipe, I also add in 1 1/2 tsp. basil, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder and a 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes. If I have a bell pepper on hand, I’ll chop up some green or red bell pepper and toss that in too. When it comes to baking, I prefer to bake mine in a 10″ by 10″ square stoneware baking dish.

Homemade Classic Meatloaf Recipe

2 lb. lean ground beef
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce, plus one teaspoon
1 ½ tsp. Colman’s Dry Mustard Powder
½ tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 cup seasoned dry bread crumbs
¾ cup beef broth
1 Tbsp. olive oil
¼ cup ketchup

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine beef, eggs, onion, 2 T. Worcestershire sauce, Colman’s Dry Mustard Powder, pepper and bread crumbs. Mix well until all ingredients are incorporated. With well-washed hands add beef broth to mixture and knead until fully blended. Oil the inside of the loaf pan and add meat mixture, patting until evenly distributed. In a small bowl, mix ketchup and 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce. Spread on top of meatloaf. Bake for 45-55 minutes.

I like the addition of mustard powder to your recipe. Otherwise my recipe is virtually the same. A meatloafcan be so comforting on a cold winter night.

I have used the classic recipe many times and find it to be the best. I like your additions of the extra seasonings and bell pepper. That would give it a little extra zing and flavor.

I haven’t made meatloaf in a while. I make mine with ground turkey and beef seasoning. The rest of the recipe is similar to yours.

Mmmm, meatloaf. Definitely one of my favorite meals, perfect with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles. Lately I’ve taken to adding some finely shredded carrot to my meatloaf, which adds nutrition as well as a bit of color and flavor, too. One of these days I’m going to make my own bread crumbs now that I’ve got a dehydrator (I’ve got your recipe for that pinned so I’ll know what to do).

I love meatloaf and make it probably twice a month. I will have to try this recipe it sounds really good. I use a wonderful meatloaf pan that my mother got for me and all of the grease drains to the bottom of the second pan so it is nice and easy to separate.

I love meatloaf. Of course, there are so many different recipes, but it seems everyone just wants the one their Mom made, lol.

I don’t think I’ve made meatloaf in 50 years. We used to have it when I was growing up and I never found a recipe that I liked. This one looks better than the one my mother made (that I never liked)

I like your version it sounds quite good. I make meatloaf maybe twice a month or so. I have found that it can be in the slow cooker. I like it baked but find it a bit greasy and in the slow cooker I can keep taking the grease off. Hubby cant have the extra fats, and it keeps it moist too.
Yours I notice doesnt use sausage, I dont think I have made it that way!
