Gettysburg Diorama and History Center

January 18, 2017 by Shelly

Gettysburg Diorama and History CenterIf you’re planning a trip to Gettysburg Pennsylvania and interested in learning more about the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, you’ll want to visit the Gettysburg Diorama & History Center.

The Diorama depicts the 3-day battle of Gettysburg in 3-D miniature. To go along with it, you’ll watch a 30 minute light & sound show that really brings the battle to life. This is a family-friendly exhibit, however, I think really small children would get bored pretty quickly. It’s best for older children and adults.

They are open 7 days a week and are located at 241 Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Their hours of operation do vary depending on the time of the year. Located within walking distance is the Gettysburg Heritage Center & Museum, the Lincoln Train Museum and Soldier’s National Cemetery. You can park your car and walk to all 4 of these fantastic attractions.

During our visit to Gettysburg we had the opportunity to check out the Diorama and absolutely loved it! It’s one of the largest dioramas that I’ve ever seen and it’s set up to recreate the famous battle from 1863 and one of the turning points from the Civil War. For us, this really brought the battle to life and we had never realized that the 3-day battle was actually spread out over 6,000 acres of land.

The diorama contains over 20,000 hand-painted soldiers, horses, cannons, buildings, landscape features and more! Wow, that’s a lot of work! With that said, it’s historically accurate in what it’s depicting. You can walk around and really take your time viewing it and reading the information that is posted near each section.

This is a pretty cool attraction and I’m glad that my husband and I took the time to go see it. We spent about an hour there and really learned a lot about the 3-day battle at Gettysburg. It’s a definite must-see and do on our list!

This is interesting! I would enjoy this a whole lot as would hubby. I remember we were on a road trip a number of years ago and found a place I think in Arkansas that had much more about the Iowa troops than Iowa did! We didnt get as far north as Gettysburg, but I wish we had. So many of the battlefields are disappearing or gone. The battles were much more spread out than most realize.

I know that my husband and I would find this Diorama and history center to be an interesting experience. It is very impressive how accurately the battle has been depicted in miniature, especially as the battle covered so much land.

That does look pretty neat. Can you imagine the effort & time that went into that? My nephews would especially love to look at this!
