Higbee Beach is one of those little beaches in Cape May that are off the beaten path. While millions of people flock to the main beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, we like to visit the lesser known beaches along the Delaware Bay. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, this beach sits right beside Sunset Beach at the end of Sunset Blvd. in Cape May New Jersey.
This particular one is a wildlife management area, but the public is free to walk the beach and enjoy it too. It’s managed by the division of Fish and Wildlife Services. Unlike some of the other beaches in the area, no beach tags are required, which means you can enjoy it for FREE! Plus, there is FREE parking right across the beach too!
The last time we visited Higbee Beach we experienced some light rain showers, so my photos aren’t that fantastic. With that said, we always make sure we spend a little bit of time there every time we are at the south Jersey Shore. This particular beach is rocky with a lot of stones, so you’ll need water shoes or flip flops to enjoy it (at least in my opinion, although I see people there in their bare feet).
We like to take a beach walk and look for those famous Cape May Diamonds which are actually tumbled clear quartz stones that wash up on shore. They get tumbled smooth by the ocean tides which gives them a beautiful sheen. Every once in awhile, I’ll find a nice piece of sea glass while we are here, but I rarely find any large seashells, sand dollars or star fish, since this beach is on the bay side and not the ocean side.
If you like to watch the fishing boats and the Cape May Lewes Ferry go in and out, you can sit or stand on this beach and see that too. If you’re looking for some of the BEST sunsets out over the water in Cape May, you’ll want to be on Higbee or Sunset Beach for that too.
After we are done at Higbee, we like to walk over to Sunset Beach to do a little shopping, to grab a bite to eat at the Sunset Beach Grille and take in a round of miniature golf. When you visit, you’ll want to plan on spending at least 2 1/2 hours, so that you can enjoy everything that this little area has to offer.
Have any of you ever visited Cape May in New Jersey? What about Higbee Beach?
I have never visited Higbee Beach and I like that it is less frequented. It would be fun to find thoes polished quartz stones and watch the sunset too.
Ah! I live in Jersey and I definitely want to take a peak at this new area! Wanna do some diamond hunting.
I love this kind of beach. It just appeals to me more than the typical, tropical, sandy beach. Those ‘diamonds’ would be great to look for, lol.
This looks really relaxing to just sit and watch your beautiful surroundings! I would love to visit sometime!
Ah, that makes me wish I didn’t live 2,000 miles from there. Or 1,000 miles from a beach in the other direction.
Higbee Beach sounds like a great place to spend some time, away from the more crowded sand beaches. I’d be interested in what types of wildlife are found there–I’m always looking for opportunities to take pictures of birds, animals, and pretty plants. Love your handful sea glass!
