1,000 Steps – Picture-Perfect Hiking in Pennsylvania

1000 Steps in Huntingdon PennsylvaniaA few months ago my husband and I had the opportunity to take a road trip up to Huntingdon Pennsylvania. The drive up here to this mountain region was a gorgeous one and we got to see many beautiful things along the way. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing some of those with you here on the blog.

1,000 Steps is located in Huntingdon and is a hiking trail that goes up Jack’s Mountain. This hiking trail was established back in the early 1900’s when miners were in the area mining sand. Every day, those minors would hike up and down the mountain for work. I can’t even imagine a work-commute like that, considering the trail is about 3 1/2 miles in each direction!

To hike this trail you should be in good physical health and used to doing a lot of walking and/or hiking. The trail at times is pretty rocky, steep in some places, slippery in others and well, if you’re not in good physical shape or health, this outdoor activity is NOT for you! In addition the elevation can be high, so if you have extreme breathing issues, avoid the trails!

As your walking and hiking along you’ll come across the Juniata River and several smaller creeks. You’ll see lush greenery (during the late spring & summertime) and if you go in the Fall when the leaves are changing colors, you’ll be treated to a colorful Fall Foliage show.

You’ll want to pack a few snacks and several bottles of water. Bring along sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses and make sure you dress comfortably for the season. You’ll want to wear your most comfortable hiking boots, walking shoes or sneakers. You’ll be doing miles, upon miles of walking!

We spent several hours up there walking the trails and just sitting around on & around the trails relaxing. We saw some of the prettiest mountain & valley scenery that Pennsylvania has to offer.

One of the things that I absolutely LOVED seeing was a natural waterfall. It’s not a large one like you see at Niagara Falls or at Bushkill, but it was a nice little size and sounded amazing! I was a little nervous crossing one of the rope & plank-style bridges, but once I got across it, I was fine.

If you live in Pennsylvania or one of the surrounding states here in the northeast, this would make a fabulous day trip or weekend trip away. With that said, these trails are NOT for little kids, so you’ll need to leave them at home. We had a great time and will definitely be going back again next year!
