I’ve been pretty lucky so far with potty training my now adult daughter and my 7 1/2 year old granddaughter. Both of them were fully trained to use the potty by 24 to 25 months of age. I credit the early learning to the fact that we started very early and were consistent in our teaching methods.
Now that I’m a grandmother to a little boy, I’m responsible for helping to potty train him too, since I babysit him 2-3 days every week. Today, I’m going to share with all of you some valuable underwear training & potty training tips for parents to use.
Underwear Training Tips from Dr. Tanya Altmann:
Dr. Tanya is a UCLA-trained pediatrician and mom of three. She is a best-selling author, network television parenting expert, and entertainment industry. After 14 years in a busy group pediatric practice, Dr. Tanya founded Calabasas Pediatrics, a concierge practice providing personalized pediatric health care with an emphasis on nutrition, a healthy lifestyle and preventive medicine.
Tip 1 – Excite with Underwear: Get your child excited about wearing underwear. The journey to underwear training is two-fold: 1) getting your child to use the potty and 2) getting them used to no longer wearing diapers. Because of this new journey, I like to call “potty training” – underwear training.
Tip 2 – Patience is Key: Children learn to use the potty at different ages. Typically, a child is ready between the ages of 2 and 3 years of age. If your child is not ready, don’t rush them!
Tip 3 – Look for Signs: You will typically start to notice cues that your child is ready for underwear training. Some of these signs include signaling to you before they go in their diaper, interest in what goes on in the bathroom and/or the desire to start using the potty.
Tip 4 – Know the Underwear ABCs: With underwear training, children need to be able to know a few things like: A). when they need to go, B). how to get to the bathroom, and C). how to get themselves onto the potty.
Tip 5 – Encourage Use of Training Pants: Training pants are a fantastic way to ease into the underwear training process and the best next step after diapers in order to get children used to the feeling of underwear. A child shouldn’t go from diaper to regular underwear without using training pants in between.
Tip 6 – Lead by Example: As a parent, you are the best role model for your child and the best example to show them how to go. Let children come into the bathroom with you at a young age to watch how it’s done. In addition, you’ll want to teach them to wash their hands every time before leaving the bathroom. Children learn by watching those around them.
Tip 7 – All Children Have Accidents: Here’s a personal tip from me. All children will have accidents during potty training and sometimes for a few years afterwards. This is totally normal and a child should not be punished or disciplined for having potty training accidents.
Now that I’ve shared 7 great underwear training & potty training tips with you, it’s equally important that you use the right training underwear to get the job done.

I doubt that I have any great potty training tips, lol. I think all you can do is be patient, never try to make them feel bad about ‘accidents’ & try to convince them it’s so great to be a ‘big kid!’
always use lots of encouragement
Our youngest is potty training. We took him to the store and let him choose his own underpants. By letting him participate in the decision, he can take ownership of the situation and feel proud when he stays dry all day.
Do not force potty training – it will come eventually.
Know the signs when they are ready to potty train.

Lots of encouragement is the way to go!
1. Use positive reinforcement so they get comfortable with the potty. We used a sticker chart and bigger (dollar store) rewards at the end of a great week.
2. Every child is different, what works for one might not work for the other child.
3. A LOT of patience.
My tip is to be patient and consistent.

We are just starting to potty train our daughter and this is our first. So we are open to suggestions for help and don’t have any tips quite yet!
My best tip is to wait till your child is ready. My oldest wasn’t interested in potty training till she was 3.5, but when she was ready she was completely potty trained in a day.
The biggest thing that I had to absolutely master was patience.. like everyone else. We can’t rush them and expect them to understand the concept in the blink of an eye. I think a reward system really helped me as well!
I love to use a chart with stickers and cheap prizes as well.

Just be patient! They know when they are ready. I would always start, get resistance, then they would just start using the potty.
Make sure you use a reward system as a way to encourage and make it fun

Dont force it! Also you need to give prizes!
Wait until they are ready and get them excited about potty training. Also, try not to go a vacation for a few months because they never want to go to a different potty in the beginning!

Get them used to the potty chair early. Use rewards.
1. Be patient.

My best tip for potty training is to do it in the summer months when you have to have the least amount of clothes on makes it easier for the child to get them on and off by themselves and less laundry to do!

My kids have all preferred the separate potty seat vs the toilet topper since it wasn’t as scary or intimidating. Also, a chart of some sort helped us too.
No kids so no profound tips. I just know it takes a large heaping of patience to get through it.
Thanks for the contest.
Look for the cues to tell whether or not your child is ready for potty training. Its important to have plenty of patience and just breathe! remember that each kid develops and learns at their own pace.

My daughter is in the process of potty training now. She has a bag of M&Ms that got her through the 1st few days nicely. She had a small free standing potty to start but ended up buying one that goes on our toilet.

Honestly, I don’t have any children. So, I really don’t have any tips to offer up. Other than to be patient with your child and don’t get frustrated with them.

I think that starting later speeds up potty training. I waited until I really thought my girls were ready. You also really need to be consistent when you start.
my tips are to be consistent and make sure your kiddo is ready
1. If a boy, use the old tried and true Cheerio (or other floating cereal) trick to improve aim!
2. Use rewards, verbal if possible rather than material unless it is the ‘final’ milestone of being potty trained. Kids really do like praise. Never scold for an accident.
