DIY Metal Plant Stand Makeover!
If you’ve been reading this blog for the past few years or even the past few months, you’ll already know that I consider myself to be frugal and crafty. I love to decorate my home in a beach & coastal style, but let’s face it, these days home decor can be really expensive!
My one neighbor moved out a few weeks ago and she knows that I love house plants and gardening. She gave me her old black wrought iron 2-tier plant holder and I thanked her. I knew right away that “black iron” won’t fit within my home decor, but I knew I could do something with it.
I headed over to Lowe’s (one of my favorite home improvement stores) and purchased a can of white exterior spray paint. Luckily for me, they had this particular can on clearance for only $1.50 so I snagged it out. I wanted exterior paint so that I can move the plant stand out onto my front porch during the late spring, summer and early fall seasons and then back indoors during the cold winter season.
I had to clean up that old black wrought iron plant stand so I sprayed it down with the garden hose and a little bit of liquid soap. I left it dry in the sunshine. There was a small area that had a little bit of rust on the metal finish, so I took a sanding block to that. If you have to do any sanding, make sure you wipe those lose particles off with a dry towel.
It took about 1/2 of a can of the exterior white spray paint to do the first coat. I left it thoroughly dry outside and overnight. I then sprayed the second coat and it did take the entire can to completely cover up the black. I left it dry for 24 hours.
I absolutely LOVE my new 2-tier plant stand and having it solid white works completely with my beach & coastal home decor! Wow…just a coat of paint made that thing look entirely brand new and it only cost me $1.50. Now, that’s a frugal home decor bargain!
