“I break the chains. I fly sky high. There’s nothing I can’t do.” Follow the transformation of Captain Perseverance, ordinary kid turned superhero, as he discovers the superpower that turns the dread of struggle into the joy of success. With high-energy illustrations and text that sings from the page, Captain Perseverance inspires young readers to discover the power of Grit.
Captain Perseverance is the must-have book for educators, librarians, parents and relatives of young children everywhere. It teaches children that no matter what they struggle with day-to-day, such as learning to read, playing an instrument, long division, if you work hard and keep at it, you have the power to become unstoppable. This book will encourage your students & children to keep at it and not give up. As they always say, “practice makes perfect.”
Brod Bagert is the award-winning author of 18 books on poetry for children, youth and adults. His awards include the International Reading Association’s prestigious Young Adults Choices Award, the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award, the Independent Publisher Gold Book Award and Mom’s Choices Gold Medal. Prior to becoming a poet, Bagert practiced law, served in public office and managed his own practice for 21 years before shutting it down and becoming one of America’s few full-time, professional poets. Brod currently lives in New Orleans with Debby, his wife of over 46 years, where they spend quality time with their four children and a growing tribe of grandchildren.
As an educator, librarian, step-mom to an eight year old boy and aunt to a four year old boy, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review Captain Perseverance. Many times throughout the year I have to watch as my son struggles with many activities—math, spelling, landing a move in gymnastics— and I witness the frustrations and cries when it’s just not clicking. Enter Captain Perseverance: How I Became a Superhero. This book allows the reader to understand their feelings, and allows them to identify with the character in the book. This book shows that everyone goes through struggles in their life, but if you persevere and not give up on your dreams, you can overcome any obstacle in your way.
I also really love the illustrations. Each page shows a different theme depending on what subject the character is discussing. My favorite page is in regards to the science fair. If you look at the judges, you’ll notice they resemble three of our great scientists: Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla and Sir Isaac Newton.
Overall, this is a great book for all. I love the storyline and illustrations and I firmly believe that this book is a must have. So if you have a little one or a bunch of little ones (educators), then this is the perfect book for you. You can find this book for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and iBooks. So invest today…you won’t be disappointed.

I learned this about Brad; Brod is always comparing poetry to music. That’s because he believes that the sound of words is as important to poetry as the sound of the notes is to music. For Brod, poetry is meant to be performed-
