It’s the time of year when millions of parents and children are getting ready to head back-to-school. I know here in our area, the kids go back to school later this month. Every year it seems they go back earlier and earlier. When I was a child, we always went back a few days after Labor Day.
We are almost done with Gia’s clothing shopping and are now working on getting her new school supplies for the year. You know…notebooks, pencils, markers, crayons, new erasers, paper clips, decorative tape, regular tape, all-purpose glue, notebook paper, etc.
The great folks over at Yoobi sent us a box of goodies to get us started. The Princess received a new composition notebook, a spiral-bound notebook, a 6-pack of erasers, a 2-pack of Washi tape, a 6-pack of reusable clips, a stapler & staple set with plastic storage case and a new pair of scissors. These are all things that a child needs throughout the school year.
With some of the supplies we received from Yoobi, we decided to decorate both of her notebooks to give them a customized look. Let’s face it, kids love having decorated notebooks that no-one else will have. Here’s how we did them. Remember, she’s only 7 years old so we didn’t get too fancy with them.
How to Decorate School Notebooks
Notebooks
2-4 Rolls of Washi Tape
Scissors
Stickers
Markers
I’m the type of grandparent that let’s my grandchild come up with her own creativity. I will guide her a little bit, but I want her to make projects that she designs herself, whether they look silly or not. Know what I mean?
Anyway, we measured the width and length of each of her notebooks. By having the measurements, we knew how long to cut the Washi Tape that we were using to decorate them. Washi Tape is a self-adhesive tape so you don’t need any type of glue or adhesive.
She decided to run 3 strips of the Washi Tape across the front and back covers of each of her notebooks as shown in the photo above. She then ran one vertical strip of Washi Tape down the front (near the spine) of each notebook. She then decorated the notebook covers with some stickers that we had on hand. She used markers to write her name, teacher’s name and classroom number inside each notebook and her name just on the outside cover. Kids can do a simple design like she did or get really fancy decorating their school notebooks. The important thing is to let them have the creative control.
Yoobi also sent us a package of their clips and they came with an additional pack of wiggle eyes. She had fun sticking those wiggle eyes onto the faces of each of those clips (onto the marked eyes). Next week we are going to go out and buy her school pencils and then decorate them with the remaining Washi Tape that we have by just winding the tape around each pencil. Fun!
Here is another quick & easy idea for personalizing a child’s school notebook.
Kid’s Craft Project: Mosaic Tile School Notebook
Notebook
Foam Mosaic Tiles (self-adhesive)
Dark Marker
Tiny Self-Adhesive Rhinestones
We used a composition style notebook for this one. We purchased a variety pack of 3/16″ square self-adhesive foam squares found in the general craft supplies section at your local craft store. We took a marker and made a block-style letter G (her first initial in her name) and then she simply placed the little self-adhesive foam tiles over-the-top. She added a few tiny rhinestones onto the center of some of the foamie squares to add some glitz & glam. Sorry my photo really doesn’t pick up on that, but you get the gist!
When you head out this year to do your back-to-school shopping, don’t forget to pick up some quint essential school supplies from Yoobi. You can find these supplies at Target stores and at Yoobi.

This is a cute idea to dress up kids notebooks. Plus its something they will enjoy dong themselves.
This is such a fun and cute idea. I think it really helps to engage kids and get them excited about their school year by making their school supplies personalized and doing it themselves.
This is a great idea. Kids would love to have personalized notebooks. I agree with you about letting them do their own work with only a little guidance from an adult.
Jo-Ann ~ I see way too many bloggers posting kid’s crafts and those crafts were made by adults, not little kids. They’re way too perfect. You need to let kids do their own creativity and designs with just guidance from an adult. Those crafts shouldn’t be all fancy and look done by adults. Frustrates me! They do it just so they have “pretty photos”.
This is such a clever idea and make their notebooks so unique. We have got to do this project this year thanks for sharing this one. I can’t believe school is just right around the corner where does the time go.
Oh, that’s a great idea! I never even thought about washi tape for notebooks! My niece is 12 & she would love this!
