Family Movie Night – The Martial Arts Kid

July 18, 2016 by A Bailey

martial-arts-kid-posterTraditionz Entertainment’s 2015 movie The Martial Arts Kid may, at first glance, seem similar to The Karate Kid, but the characters and storyline are quite different, bringing a fresh twist to the story of a young underdog who seeks redemption through strong role models and martial arts.

Movie Synopsis: Robbie (Jansen Panettiere) goes to Florida to stay with his Aunt (Cynthia Rothrock) and Uncle (Don “The Dragon” Wilson), who own a martial arts dojo that upholds the traditional martial arts principles of discipline and honor. Robbie falls for Rina (Kathryn Newton), whose boyfriend Bo (Matthew Ziff), the town bully, belongs to a mixed martial arts gym where the code is “assess, assert, dismantle.” The ensuing conflicts lead to an exciting conclusion where the two opposing dojos are put to the test and Robbie must prove himself.

My Thoughts: I confess that I am a fan of those old dubbed Kung Fu movies. That being said, I enjoyed this movie with its real martial arts well performed by contemporary practitioners. Although the plot’s formula was predictable and the dialog was sometimes stilted, I found the story engaging, and the Cocoa Beach setting was beautiful. The coming-of-age theme is great for teens and the movie as a whole should appeal to adults, as well; however, I don’t think it would be suitable for young children. Overall, I liked this movie more than I thought I would!

The Martial Arts Kid will be available for digital download on Amazon and iTunes on July 19th, and will also be available on Blu-Ray and DVD. The Special Edition DVD I received includes the theatrical trailer, commentary, deleted scenes, and other bonus features. It is not rated by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), but The Dove Foundation deemed it Family Approved for Ages 12+. The movie’s running time is about 104 minutes.

You can purchase The Martial Arts Kid DVD for a great price from Amazon.
