Typically when I do my weekly Wednesday post, I usually feature something travel related. However, this week I decided to share something more personal.
Back on the morning of June 26th, my daughter was carrying my grandson down the steps. They have a good many stairs that lead from their kitchen and down into the basement where they have their family room, another bathroom, a storage room and a laundry room.
Jenelle was carrying Prince and about step #2 from the top…she fell down, about 11 steps in total. She felt herself falling and couldn’t stop the fall, so she just held Prince close to her body to try to buffer his fall. Yup, her motherly instincts came right out!
They went down 11 steps and are pretty lucky that their injuries aren’t worse than what they are. Jenelle bruised up her back, tailbone & hip. Little Prince had to be taken to the ER to get X-rays and ended up with a fracture in his leg. They decided to put a full leg cast on him to immobilize the fracture. We are praying that both of them continue to heal.
Right after this occurred it brought back flooding memories to me of when my daughter (Jenelle) fell at cheerleading practice and fractured her arm. She ended up with a purple cast on her arm for several weeks. That was her one and only fracture as a child.
Another serious injury had occurred the following year when 2 boys in our neighborhood kicked open a heavy wooden door as she was walking by. The door knob hit her in the face and her face & head swelled 2-times it’s normal size. Back then the ER doc said we were very lucky that she didn’t suffer any brain injuries & just had all of that swelling and a mild concussion.
When my brother was a little boy he sat in his wagon and took it down a flight of stairs and fractured his collar bone. When I was a little girl (around 10 or so) I fell out of a tree and broken 2 fingers and ended up getting about 15 sutures across the palm of my hand.
Having children and grandchildren sure is a lot of hard work and that work gets even harder when they have a traumatic injury or accident. I guess it’s pretty normal for kids to fall & break a bone and/or to get stitches at least once in their young life. With that said, it still brings tears to my eyes every time I see a small child get hurt!
Have you ever had a broken bone? What about your children or grandchildren? Luckily for us, Prince’s injury is just one fracture and he’ll be in that cast for 6-8 weeks. We are very thankful that this fall didn’t hurt them more than what it did.
I am glad that neither one was more seriously hurt. There now are waterproof sleeves that can be put over casts if your grandson want to get into the water. I was lucky just to get stitches on my chin and a broken toe. My sons each broke a leg at different times. It is always hard when a family member is injured.
(Children and Their First Broken Bone) Awe poor little guy, I am glad that it was not any worse than it was. I fell also about three weeks ago down our back steps going outside. Only five steps though thank god, after a bad rain storm and I had a pair of those cheap flip-flops on so that didn’t help the situation either. I did back, tailbone, and bottom too. Had a huge black & blue bruise on my bottom about two days after the fall. I will not be doing that again anytime soon I can promise you that.
That must have been so frightening for Jenelle–and for you and the rest of the family, too, when you found out. Poor little Prince actually looks pretty happy in the picture, so I hope he’s doing okay with the cast. He’s young enough that he won’t remember it, so for him, it will just be a story. Best of luck to Jenelle and Prince, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I don’t know how I managed it, but I’ve never had a broken bone, even though I was quite the tomboy when I was a kid. Lucky.
Oh, no. Poor little guy! He looks like he’s handling it pretty contentedly, though. (I hope it doesn’t start to itch under there! My cousin was backed over by a truck as a kid, had a cast from upper thigh to foot for over a month & he said the worst part was when it itched.) I’ve been lucky so far…51 & no broken bones yet!
I never had any broken bones, which was a miracle since I was in so many sports growing up. I was on crutches for stress fractures in both feet as a teen, putting the breaks on my cross-country running for a while though. Good thing kids take it all in stride. Honestly, adults are worse with complaining, and sometimes getting in trouble with pain meds. So glad both mom and babe are healing nicely.
I broke my elbow when I was 6! I thought it would be cool to hang from the cracks in between the stairs of my apartment building. I have a 15 month old daughter who is such a little daredevil and it scares me so much!
It is really scary now that he’s on the move! He drags that cast around and tries to stand up on it. He’s very adventurous whereas his sister wasn’t on the go like him. He doesn’t like that he can’t get into the bathtub right now or in our pool, kid LOVES water.
Thank God Your Daughter and Grandson Didn’t get hurt any worse then they Did!! !! steps down is a long hard fall!! Hope they both continue to heal quickly~ I don’t remember ever having a Fracture or break of any kind when I was a Child. I was very active into everything but Didn’t get hurt very bad!!I think I have made up for it since I am older especially the past several Years. I fall over nothing!! I have to be very careful and watch my step always! Both of my daughters did have fractured arm! One fell off her Bike on to a Wrought Iron Chair and Fractured her arm.. The other fell off the monkey Bars at school and fractured her arm. They were both around 8 yrs old!! When they are school age and fracture their writing arm it sure is a “Hassle” trying to do their school work sing theire other arm and Hand!
I am so happy to hear that both your daughter and grandson are on the road to healing. What a scary moment for them but isn’t it amazing how brave someone can be when they are protecting their child. I have an 11 month grandson and he seems to get a new bump or bruise every other day. I honestly feel that seeing our loved ones hurt or injured is one of the hardest things.
