Children and Their First Broken Bone
Typically when I do my weekly Wednesday post, I usually feature something travel related. However, this week I decided to share something more personal.
Back on the morning of June 26th, my daughter was carrying my grandson down the steps. They have a good many stairs that lead from their kitchen and down into the basement where they have their family room, another bathroom, a storage room and a laundry room.
Jenelle was carrying Prince and about step #2 from the top…she fell down, about 11 steps in total. She felt herself falling and couldn’t stop the fall, so she just held Prince close to her body to try to buffer his fall. Yup, her motherly instincts came right out!
They went down 11 steps and are pretty lucky that their injuries aren’t worse than what they are. Jenelle bruised up her back, tailbone & hip. Little Prince had to be taken to the ER to get X-rays and ended up with a fracture in his leg. They decided to put a full leg cast on him to immobilize the fracture. We are praying that both of them continue to heal.
Right after this occurred it brought back flooding memories to me of when my daughter (Jenelle) fell at cheerleading practice and fractured her arm. She ended up with a purple cast on her arm for several weeks. That was her one and only fracture as a child.
Another serious injury had occurred the following year when 2 boys in our neighborhood kicked open a heavy wooden door as she was walking by. The door knob hit her in the face and her face & head swelled 2-times it’s normal size. Back then the ER doc said we were very lucky that she didn’t suffer any brain injuries & just had all of that swelling and a mild concussion.
When my brother was a little boy he sat in his wagon and took it down a flight of stairs and fractured his collar bone. When I was a little girl (around 10 or so) I fell out of a tree and broken 2 fingers and ended up getting about 15 sutures across the palm of my hand.
Having children and grandchildren sure is a lot of hard work and that work gets even harder when they have a traumatic injury or accident. I guess it’s pretty normal for kids to fall & break a bone and/or to get stitches at least once in their young life. With that said, it still brings tears to my eyes every time I see a small child get hurt!
Have you ever had a broken bone? What about your children or grandchildren? Luckily for us, Prince’s injury is just one fracture and he’ll be in that cast for 6-8 weeks. We are very thankful that this fall didn’t hurt them more than what it did.
