Snakes – Love Them or Hate Them?

June 27, 2016 by Shelly

Disgusting SnakeSnakes…some people love them but personally I hate them! Seriously, I HATE SNAKES…ALL SNAKES! I don’t care if they are non-venomous and I don’t care if they are just a baby. To me, a snake is a damn snake!

Every summer we normally see one or two on our property. However, last year (Summer 2015) we probably seen a dozen! I think the reason we saw so many is that there is no natural predators here to take care of them…other than the occasional car running over them (to my HAPPY JOY) I might add.

I know that every living creature has a purpose for being here on Earth but frankly, a snake is one that I can do without! I can get rid of rodents and small mammals with other ways. Yes, I know they were living here first but now that I’ve moved…they need to move the hell outta here because I don’t want them!

Now that summer is in full swing, we will be taking some measures to keep them out of here. We read online that we can use lime, coyote or wolf urine and other things. Yup, I will be on a mission to snake-proof my property this year!!!

So, do you love them or hate them? What say’s you?

I am a animal lover but I just can’t take snakes! I really hate them. They make me feel so squeamish!! I had some snake traumas when I was younger involving rattlesnakes and I never really got over them. Bugs don’t freak me out just snakes.

I don’t hate snake, but I don’t want to pick one up nor find it in a pool. I know that some snakes are helpful in that they eat bugs, and as long as none crawl over me I am fine with that. I am sorry that you had such a terrifying experience when you were young.

Wow–after your copperhead bite, I can understand why you’re on the “hate” side of the snake question. I’m actually pretty neutral about them. I’m neither fond nor afraid of them, but I always give them as much space as possible when I see one outside. If I think about it, I feel really bad for their prey, who must die a terrible and painful death.

I HATE snakes too! To me the best snake is a dead snake! I know they serve some purpose but they can go as far as I am concerned. I am going to sprint out and buy some of the wolf urine that you suggested and put that outside around our house. We get rattle snakes around our house and they scare the hell out of me. I think they are so evil! One of my friends is always inviting me over to her house and I have to come up with one excuse after another because her son has a pet python snake and I don’t want to go to her house because of it. I should just tell her that is the reason why I don’t want to visit but I don’t know how to say it.

I know they serve a purpose…but oh, hell, no, lol!!! I cannot abide snakes! Many years ago, I stepped out my back door at night & it was so dark I couldn’t see a thing, but I felt something slither over the top of my right foot. I let out a blood curdling shriek. I was a mess, lol!

Oh my gosh, you’re lucky he didn’t strike & bite you. When I got my copperhead bite it was towards the back of my foot & ankle area. I immediately felt pain and we were 45 mins away (by car) to a hospital. They ended up calling an ambulance who had me life flighted to the hospital because of it being a copperhead bite and my young age. Even at my old age now, I still have nightmares from that.

I don’t mind snakes at all when they are outside. When you find them in your bathtub however, that’s an entirely different story!

I would have a heart attack or stroke, heck, probably BOTH if I found a snake any where in our home! Ugh!

I do not think snakes should be in our back yard. I can not stand snakes! They are gross and ugly, and are not safe to be around. So sorry Shelly that you got bit by a snake with you were 12. That is an awful experience. I see why you are making sure to keep them out of your yard! They can get into the house!

where we grew up there were many snakes, garden snakes, but also some copperheads. I’m sure they have a worthy purpose, but I feel screamy just seeing a picture of one!! Good to know there are things to do to discourage them from around your house.

I’m reminded of a quote from my favorite movie Raiders of the Lost Ark: ‘Snakes! Snakes! Why’d there have to be Snakes? I HATE snakes’. See, even Indiana Jones felt the same way as you do.

Slithering snakes darn near make me hurl! I have to look away when the sci-fi shows that I watch use those snake-like creatures. On the sci-fi show Stargate SG-1, there’s an alien race call the Goa’uld that have a symbiote or a snake-like aquatic parasite predator inside them, and they take a host by slithering into their ear or being eaten! Ugh, just too gross for me to watch a snake slithering into a person!

I’m not a fan of snakes and I have NO desire to pick them up but we do have gardener snakes in our yard. The past few years we’ve had a mama and a baby but the baby died, we think by a cat.

Living in Iowa we dont have poison snakes and the few that are here arent as far north as I am . Mind you, the bull snakes are huge, but for the most part snakes do not bother me.
Garter snakes are the most common, and they eat bugs which I detest. I dont want a snake crawling on me mind you, but no they dont bother me.
I have been around cotton mouths and all sorts of other snakes and there are very very few that wont leave before you get there. The trick is to remove whatever they are attracted to if you want them to go.

You’ve got it right, Shelly!!! They have a purpose. I know they do. I’m with you and everything on God’s earth has one, but it doesn’t have to be near me. Small, non-poisonous, skinny, red, black, brown even if I saw one made of gold I’m pretty sure I’d want it gone. 🙂 I just don’t want anything to do with them. I’m freaked by the idea of a pet one. Good for those people but no thanks. Slithering around in the grass where it’s hard to see them…stay out of my yard!

Sherry, I got bit by a copperhead snake when I was about 12 years old on my foot. Since that time, I’ve become deathly afraid of all snakes. The anti-venom treatment I received as a child was nightmarish and I never want to experience anything like that again. If the snakes want to stay out in the dessert or in the woods, that’s fine…just not in my backyard. Every year we see more & more of them here because they don’t have any natural predators here in the suburbs. I told Hubby he needs to hunt them down & kill them, so him & the 2 neighbors are going to watch out for the snakes and dramatically decrease their numbers if they see them. I have a pool in my backyard and 2 grandchildren, I can’t have snakes running around here. Ugh.

We have a pool too and getting a snake in one is SCARY! Doubly scary for you. I am so sorry. I’m glad the anti-venom was there, but how traumatizing for you as a child…or at any age. Hopefully, they will find them before you do.

OMG…I would just die if I find one swimming around in our pool. Oh My GEEEEE! That’s frightening to even think about! I saw one earlier today slithering thru my neighbor’s driveway. They weren’t home and I locked myself inside. It was a big, ugly black snake this time around. Ugh. Seriously, we have a snake over-population problem here in my suburb neighborhood & I’m calling the game commission about it.
