For the past 7 years I’ve been buying and/or reviewing toys and games from the company called Educational Insights. If you’re unfamiliar with this company, They’re the manufacturer of playful products with serious educational value, including subject-specific classroom products, teacher resources, educational toys, and games. Their products are designed by seasoned educators and parents who know that children love to learn when you make that learning experience fun!
We were sent a complimentary Nancy B’s Science Club Bug Discovery Lab & Incredible Insects Journal from Educational Insights to review for all of you. This set is for children ages 8 and up and is part of the Nancy B’s Science Club line of products.
The set includes:
Pit Trap
Bug Catcher
Portable Bug Terrarium
22-Page Insects Journal
With 3 tools to trap & study insects, the Bug Discovery Lab lets you safely & easily collect and observe insects. If you see a specimen, you simply place the unique domed Bug Catcher over it and slide the bottom underneath. If you want to be surprised, you can dig a hole in your yard and bury the Pit Trap – the yellow color attracts all kinds of insects. Place your critters in the Portable Bug Terrarium for up-close views from all angles. The included Incredible Insects Journal is jam-packed with fun insect facts and activities for little one’s to enjoy.
My grand daughter is 7 years old and like most kids, she’s curious about the various insects in our surrounding world. She has a real fascination with ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies, katydids, etc. Just like me though…we avoid the biting and stinging insects for sure!
One of the things I really like about the Bug Discovery Lab & Insects Journal is that this set is totally portable and doesn’t have a slew of pieces with it. It’s compact in size which makes it a great set to take along with us when we go camping or down to the beach. It’s also a great kit to use in your own backyard or take it out to the local neighborhood park.
Inside the journal we learned a LOT of new things! For example: We learned that spiders (like tarantulas) are not insects, same goes for scorpions. One of the included activities that Gia enjoyed doing was the scavenger hunt in the backyard to find insects that had a bent antenna, an insect with wings, an insect with 3 colors and an insect eating a plant. This particular activity took us about 3 days to complete because we couldn’t find an insect with a bent antenna for the longest time!
The Insect Journal includes instructions on how to make a homemade butterfly catching net, teaches you about different “baits” you can use to attract insects, an entire activity page that is all about crickets, plus additional fun activities that you can do. In the back of the book you’ll find a small insect field guide to help you identify the insects that you find.
This is a wonderful activity for parents, grandparents, teachers, daycare providers, etc. to do with children. It teaches them a LOT and they have fun while learning all about the insects that live in our world!
You can purchase the Educational Insights Nancy B’s Science Club Bug Discovery Lab & Incredible Insects Journal Science Kit from Amazon for an affordable price! A great gift for a little boy and/or a little girl.
