Summer is finally here and many families will be spending time in their swimming pools at home or while on vacation. As a pool owner, I wanted to share some swimming pool safety tips with all of you.
* Make sure you have a secure fence and locking gate around the pool area. This will ensure that children and pets won’t have access when you’re not around.
* Keep the area around your pool cleaned up! Don’t let toys, rafts, floats and other items lying around. People can easily trip on these items, so keep things cleaned up.
* Invest in a first aid kit, life preservers and other necessary items, just in case there is ever an emergency.
* Every year at the beginning of the season, have a professional come out and check over the pool. You want to make sure everything is in good working order and to have your water professionally tested. If you’re looking for a great company, Pools Perth is one that comes highly recommended.
* When you see a storm approaching, it’s time for everyone to get out, regardless if you see lightning or hear it thundering. Just get out and wait for the storm to pass.
* Never allow adults to get into your pool if their drinking a lot of alcohol. Alcohol consumption can cause cramping, disorientation and a whole host of other issues.
* Make sure everyone knows the rules! No running, no diving in shallow water, no messing with the drains, pumps and other pool items.
* If you have children swimming in the pool, make sure you have enough adults around to properly supervise them. A good ratio to remember is one adult (experienced swimmer) per 4-5 children. If it’s a very small child, one adult should always be within arm’s reach.
* Don’t rely on swimming aids, floaties and/or rafts to keep you or a child safe! These are “pool toys” and not meant to save a life. If you want to invest in U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices, I would highly recommend that.
* Never swim alone! People have heart attacks, strokes and all kinds of other medical emergencies while being alone in a swimming pool!
The swimming pool is a great way to have fun this summer, but please remember, safety always comes first! Enjoy your summer!
These are very important pool safety rules both for the people around the pool and for the water quality. I did not realize that the swimming aids are not professionally approved.
Thank you for posting these 10 Important Swimming Pool Tips! They are really Great ones to follow! Their is a lot of responsibility in owning a pool~ But its worth it! 🙂 I see a lot of parents just relying on the little arm Floaties for small Children! Nothing is fool proof!! You need to watch your children when they are in a swimming pool! Another Great point you made is to have an expert come out annually and check out the pool and water!
Agree! We test our water every 2-3 days. But…we always have a professional come out 2-3 times during the summer season to just look over things and to professionally test our water. Just last week our tests showed our water was perfect (at-home test) but…the professional testing showed that we had 2 minor things wrong with our water. We have now corrected that. Your water has to be perfect to prevent bacteria growth, algae and all sorts of other things. No one wants a bacteria skin infection! If your cholorine is too high, you can actually get skin burns and if it’s ingested GI tract burns. It’s important to always make sure your water is correct!
Very good points in this article. One reason I’ve never wanted a backyard pool is all the safety issues.
This is an excellent post thank you for posting this one. I learned a lot by reading this one and I am going to share it with friends and family. I had no idea that adults could have such medical problems while swimming alone that is a scary thought. I also like that you reminded us that so many of these “swimming aids” are just toys and not to rely on them for safety.
