Chocolate mousse is one of those desserts that I could eat several times a week. I’ve always liked the rich & creamy texture of a mousse and who doesn’t love chocolate? Just seems natural that a dessert like this would be a favorite, an indulgence that is hard to resist.
Today’s recipe is courtesy of GAEA Extra Virgin Olive Oil: THE freshest premium extra virgin olive oil available! Made from hand-picked olives, pressed and bottled within hours of being picked. The recipe makes 6 servings.
Orange-Flavored Chocolate Mousse Recipe
1 1/4 cups bitter couverture (70% cocoa)
1/4 cup GAEA FRESH Extra Virgin Olive Oil
5 large organic eggs
3/4 cup sugar
Salt
2 tablespoons orange liqueur
Zest of 1 orange in shavings
Cut the couverture into small pieces. Separate the eggs’ yolk from the whites into two bowls. Melt couverture and add the olive oil and liqueur. Mix the yolks with half of the sugar and whisk until smooth. Mix the chocolate into the yolk mixture. Whip the egg whites with the rest of the sugar and the salt into firm peaks to make the meringue.
Blend together the meringue and the chocolate mixture and stir in ¾ of the orange shavings. Whisk gently until the mixture becomes smooth. Put the mousse into bowls or glasses. Place them in the fridge for at least 3 hours. Serve adding orange shavings on top of each portion.

I have never made chocolate mousse without heavy cream which obviously adds a lot of fat. I wonder how much one tastes the EVOO in the mousse. I would also have to use fresh pasteurized eggs to avoid the risk of salmonella.
I’ve made chocolate mousse many times, but this recipe is different than any I’ve ever seen. Might be worth a try the next time I get my hands on some really good chocolate. I’d probably use pasteurized eggs, though, to minimize the risk of salmonella contamination from the raw eggs. Thanks for sharing such an unusual recipe!
I love the combination of orange & chocolate. One of my favorite quick desserts is orange/vanilla swirl ice cream topped with chocolate Magic Shell (it hardens when it hits the cold ice cream.)
I’d eat mousse any day. Never seen a recipe with olive oil in it. Have to try it out.
Hmmm, I don’t have any of the ingredients to make this except the olive oil! It looks tasty though. I don’t think I’ve ever made mousse before. I’m a yogurt girl but would make this for guests at a fancy party.
Ah! Chocolate mousse! My all time favorite dessert! The airiness, the richness, the way it coats your tongue…m.mmm! I love the shavings of orange zest as a garnish too. I have to say I never tried it with EVOO, just cream…but this is going on the table this week. OMG! I can taste it now!
I never make mousse because of all the heavy cream – this is a wonderful idea with olive oil! and I love the combination of orange and chocolate – I feel like I’m on a vacation in Italy at a restaurant just looking at this! I want to try it!
I love Mousse and like how you added orange flavor to it. It sounds very interesting and I want to make this and try it out! Thanks for the recipe.
