Today is Memorial Day and the unofficial start of the summer season. Memorial Day is a holiday here in the United States where we take the time to remember all of those who died while serving in our country’s armed services. It is a day to reflect on what’s important in our lives, to remember all of those who died protecting our country and our way of life. The holiday is always held on the last Monday during the month of May.
As Americans…we live in a great country, although not perfect, but a great country and we all need to remember all of those great brave men & women who died protecting us & our way of living.
If you can…reach out to the family of a fallen hero and help support them on this very special day. Even though it’s not veterans day, it’s also a good time to remember our nation’s veterans and to help them however you can.
Today…I wanted to just reflect on this special day and to share with you some of my favorite Memorial Day quotes.
* How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes! – Maya Angelou
* These martyrs of patriotism gave their lives for an idea. – Schuyler Colfax
* For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity. – William Penn
* The story of America’s quest for freedom is inscribed on her history in the blood of her patriots. – Randy Vader
* A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. – Joseph Campbell
* The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example. – Benjamin Disraeli

Thank you for this very thoughtful and thought-provoking post. Memorial Day means so much more than sales on appliances or hamburgers on the grill–it’s a somber day, a day of remembrance, a day to honor our fallen heroes, and I appreciate your sharing your favorite quotes.
(My Favorite Memorial Day Quotes) I especially like this quote the most; The story of America’s quest for freedom is inscribed on her history in the blood of her patriots. – Randy Vader. My father was a WWII veteran who served as an Army Medic and my husbands father served in that same war on the tank division.
People forget this is NOT veterans day. Originally, it was called Decoration Day to honor those who gave all. Ones who have died in battle and including those who have passed on who have served. I am old enough to have been taught the difference… in the early 70s in turned into a three day weekend.
My Mom and Dad were both Korean War vets. We live in the same town the 5 Sullivans are from, and I recall meeting her, and the Decoration Day ceremony here in town.
So so many forget. Coming from a military family, today is a solemn one.
Thankyou so much for posting this lovely Post in Honor of Memorial Day! I really enjoyed reading it! My Favorite message for Memorial Day is the one That one of our Past Presidents recited so Beautifully! That President was Ronald Regan! I love it ~ I have never heard a better one~ God Bless Them All~
Thank you so very much for posting this one. To our family, Memorial Day is a day of great respect. We remember soldiers who gave it all for our way of life. We remember friends, fathers, brothers, sisters and all those who we have lost in our family.
I like these quotes and am glad that you were able to post them for us. For too many of us this weekend is only a holiday away from work and we forget to remember and honor all the many fallen military people.
This day has a purpose and a meaning. To all those that have and are serving, we honor them. We remember them and their families. Those are good quotes. I really like that Randy Vader one. I hadn’t heard it. My daughter does a daily holiday post, and she was looking at quotes this morning, too. She wanted one that we hadn’t heard and used Joseph Rodman Blake’s “And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.”
These are nice quotes. It is good to remember the meaning of this day, not just picnics and fun and parades to have laughs.
