I’ve got another frugal kid’s craft project for you today that doesn’t cost a lot of money and will keep any child busy for a few hours. It allows them to be creative and all of the supplies are readily available at your local craft supply store.
A few weeks ago my 6 year old grand daughter had a lot of fun painting this wooden trinket box for one of her friends. After it was done drying she carefully placed it into a gift bag along with some other things & will be giving it to her BFF as a just for fun gift.
This would be a great project for kids to give to their friends, parents, grandparents, etc. for Easter, Birthday’s, Christmas, etc. Filled up the little wooden boxes with candy, jewelry or other little treats.

Kid’s Craft Project: Painted Wood Trinket Boxes
Unfinished Wood Trinket Box
Acrylic Paints
Paint Brush
Water, Dish, Lid and Paper Towels
Holographic Party Confetti
All Purpose Craft Glue
Before your kids get started you will want to protect the table with a few sheets of newspaper or an old plastic table cloth. The trinket boxes that Gia selected had a flower design on the lid. We saw plain boxes, some with hearts and so forth. Let your child pick out the design that they would like to use.
We use plastic lids as paint palettes & then toss them away when she is done. Let the kids paint the boxes…she chose to ONLY paint the outside and she left the inside plain. Your kids can paint the inside or buy a few sheets of craft felt and line the insides with that.
Once the box is totally dry she decided to decorate the outside with some heart shaped holographic party confetti that I had on hand. We used just a small dot of all-purpose craft glue to adhere them to the trinket box and then left them dry overnight. That’s it…easy and done!
This project kept her busy for several hours! She loves to sit and craft so it’s a great rainy weather day or snowy weather day craft project that doesn’t cost a lot of money! Have fun & let them get creative!

What a fun craft and what a nice gift this makes for friends and family. My granddaughter id something like this at school to give for mothers day several years ago. I still have and cherish this gift.
I do have a number of unfinished little boxes and some paints too. I went through my old, broken jewelry and have lots of pretties to add as well. I like the tip to line the box with felt, which I also have.
This would make such a nice gift for Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents or anyone. I like how nice and colorful it is. I would almost lacquer it so it stays nice longer if it was going to a relative. I love kids crafts because as they get older you can show them you kept it and how special it was hey took the time to make it.
Your granddaughter did a very nice job. This is a great craft for kids which doesn’t cost a lot , but looks very pretty and would be great for holidays.
She did a nice job; I bet her BFF will love it. I’ve always liked boxes, tins, and other pretty containers, and this is a great gift idea. Your tip about using plastic lids to hold the paint is a good one–thanks!
This looks like such a fun craft project. I love frugal fun crafts like this one. This gives me a great idea for Father’s Day coming up thanks so much for sharing this one.
