Protecting a Newborn Baby’s Sensitive Skin #DreftSpring

April 26, 2016 by Shelly

GrandchildrenMy daughter just had her second child a few months ago and immediately turned to me for advice regarding protecting her son’s sensitive skin. From day one, Jax has had issues with baby lotions, soaps, detergents, fabrications, etc. touching his skin. Within his first 3 weeks of life he had frequent breakouts of rashes & hives. He was miserable which made mom miserable too!

The very first thing I told her to do was to change her laundry detergent to Dreft. As an experienced mother, Dreft is the brand that I used with my daughter and the brand that I used with my grand daughter. Matter of fact, I have sensitive skin myself and will often use Dreft to do my own laundry when I have flare-ups.  On top of that, I love how fresh & clean my own clothing smells after it’s been laundered with Dreft.

Once my daughter re-washed all of Jax’s clothing, crib linens and bath linens with Dreft, his skin sensitivities and allergies seemed to disappear overnight. I knew that he would have the same sensitive skin issues that tend to run in our family and that simple change made all of the difference.

Dreft Laundry Products

Dreft is the #1 baby laundry detergent choice of pediatricians and is gentle on baby’s delicate & sensitive skin. It’s hypoallergenic and has been trusted by parents for over 80 years. It has been clinically tested to be safe and gentle, even with it’s “baby scent” that is beloved by millions of parents everywhere.

Why is it Hypoallergenic? Dreft’s formula contains a unique blend of mild cleaning ingredients as well as a special technology that removes the pills and fuzz off fabrics, making clothes gentle and soft to baby’s sensitive skin. Dreft’s formula also ensures that soils in the laundry rinse out with the wash water, instead of redepositing back onto baby clothes. As a parent/grandparent, that’s important to me.

Newborn Baby Boy

The spring season brings a welcome change from the cold winter months. For parents and their babies, the warmer spring weather means spending more time outdoors, but that also brings increased exposure to allergens and the sun, all of which can be irritating to baby’s sensitive skin. Thanks to Dreft’s new partnership with Dr. Dyan Hes, here are 2 tips to ensure your baby is protected and comfortable during the spring months:

1. Protect Problem Skin: Heat is a common trigger for eczema and as the weather warms up, there are a few things you can do to help prevent flare ups of such skin irritations. The sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. so try to shield baby from direct sun exposure during those times.

2. Make Bath-Time Beneficial: Over exposure to water can actually rob skin of natural moisture. Scaling back on tub time will help avoid resulting itch — about 10 minutes is plenty of time for water play and a quick scrub. Use warm water (vs. hot) and leave the suds to the very end. Use a mild cleanser to keep skin soft and itch-free. Gently pat skin dry and end with an after-bath moisturizer to seal in moisture and protect baby’s soft skin.

As parents and grandparents it’s our job to protect baby’s sensitive skin and one simple thing you can do is use Dreft when laundering baby’s clothing.

Twitter Party: Would you like to learn more about how you can protect baby’s sensitive skin? If so, I would like to invite you to RSVP for the upcoming Twitter party with @Dreft and Dr. Hes (@gramercypeds) on May 9th, 2016 at 9:00 PM EST/8:00 PM CST.  Please RSVP HERE and check out the Twitter party prizes too! My daughter is grown, but she was born with very sensitive skin and would scratch sores all over her body. We used Dreft (and will still do it when she has a breakout), did occasional oatmeal baths, and Lubriderm was a great lotion for us. She couldn’t do most aloe things. My tip would be to be patient both with someone who has sensitive skin and with yourself.
