Friendly Vanuatu: Your Top Questions Answered

tropicalislandVanuatu is a fantastic holiday destination, as well as being a popular stop for people travelling on cruises. However, if you are planning to visit this tropical South Pacific island, you may have a few questions in mind about what to expect. Here is a quick guide to some of the top questions about Vanuatu, along with their answers to help you prepare better for your visit.

What is There to Do?

You’ll find that there is plenty to see and do on Vanuatu that will keep you busy for as long as you want to stay. As well as the stunning beaches and beautiful clear water that is perfect for snorkelling, you will also find plenty of other attractions here.

Many people visit Vanuatu as part of a cruise, such as a Royal Caribbean cruise and there are plenty of excursions of interest for day visitors.

For example, you could visit Ekasup Cultural Village to learn about the traditional customs and culture of the local people. Alternatively, you could go on a tour to Mele Cascades, the beautiful waterfalls near to Port Vila where you will be able to go right to the top to see the views, bathe in the pools and even abseil down the walls.

Mount Yasur is an active volcano that is a huge draw for visitors. You can drive or walk to the top, from where you will be able to look down into the lava crater below. In addition, if you are an experienced scuba diver, the SS President Coolidge wreck off the coast of Santos is one of the most famous wreck dives in the world.

What Will the Weather Be Like?

The weather in Vanuatu is generally hot all year round, and you can visit at any time. However, it does vary according to the season. April to October is probably the best time to visit, with cool breezes preventing it from getting too hot or humid. December to April is the wet season here, and it is hotter and more humid at this time of year as well.

Will I Be Understood?

The people of Vanuatu speak three main languages. English and French are both official languages, but the most widely spoken language is Bislama, which is a form of Pidgin English. This is the main language spoken by the ni-Vanuatu, so learn a few phrases if you can. The locals also speak dozens of other native languages, but you will have no trouble being understood, especially in Port Vila.

What Clothing Is Recommended?

Dress for hot weather and you will be fine during your time in Vanuatu. The only thing to remember is that if you venture to more rural areas then you should dress more modestly, which especially applies to women.

Other than that, swimwear is fine on the beach, and take some comfortable shoes if you plan to go on any treks. A hat for the sun is recommended, and if you visit in the wet season, take an umbrella rather than a raincoat.

What Else Is Useful to Pack?

There is nothing specific that you will need to pack for Vanuatu compared to any other islands in the region. However, insect repellent, sunscreen, a snorkel and mask, and a basic first-aid kit are all recommended.

What Are Communications Like?

You will be able to use the internet in the larger towns of Port Vila and Luganville, and phones are available in most places. However, if you venture to rural areas, phones and the internet become less easy to access. If you are staying for a few weeks, you may want to pick up a local SIM card for your mobile phone.

What Currency Should I Use?

The vatu is the local currency, which you can withdraw from an ATM upon arrival. You will need to use the local currency when venturing out of Port Vila or Luganville, but otherwise you should be able to use Australian dollars to pay for most things.

Is Travelling Around Easy?

Travelling around in Vanuatu is quite easy. The main type of public transport is the bus, and you can hail these down on the road and they will stop for you if they have space. However, taxis are probably the easiest way to get around. You should also be able to arrange travel to other islands fairly easily.

Enjoy Your Time in Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an excellent place to spend anything from a day to a few weeks. Whether you plan to spend your entire time on the beach, or you want to venture inland and explore the jungles and mountains of the interior, you will find everything you want right here. Keep the above questions and answers in mind and use them to help you to prepare better for your time in Vanuatu.
