Kids Crafts: Valentine’s Day Keepsake Card Box

Today is February 6th and Valentine’s Day is just about a week away. This coming week the Princess has a Valentine’s Day party at school and one at Girl Scout’s to attend. One of the things she needed was a card collection box, so we decided to make one ourselves.

Our projects today were all sponsored by: Yoobi.

Yoobi is based on a bright yet simple idea: colorful, vibrant supplies for school, home or office that give to classrooms in need. For every Yoobi item purchased, Yoobi contributes a Yoobi item to a classroom in need, right here in the U.S. You can visit their site to learn more about the company and to see the products that they make. Yoobi Craft Supplies

Yoobi graciously sent us all of the craft supplies that you see in the above photo. We used all of those supplies in the following craft projects along with our own glue sticks (glue made for paper).

We took a sturdy box with a lid and decided to decorate it. We used the light pink paper that Yoobi sent to us to cover the outside of the box and then placed one sheet inside the box, to line the bottom. We had to slightly cut the paper to fit our box. For this, it was best to use a scrapbooking glue stick, instead of liquid school glue.

Once we had the box covered, the Princess cut out a large heart from the purple paper that they sent. She glued that to the center of the box. She used all of the markers that they sent to decorate the front and inside of her box (with my help) we wrote words that went along with Valentine’s Day.

They sent along a jar of metallic heart shaped glitter shapes (confetti) and we did use the school glue that they sent to glue those around the edges of her box. She specifically used just the silver, pink, red and purple colored hearts. Finally, she used one of their toucan stickers on the front of the box because she thought it was cute and a second one inside the box.

She kept the inside of her box pretty simple. It’s lined in a sheet of purple paper and accented with a pink heart that she cut out & glued onto the box. She randomly glued more of the metallic glitter hearts around that and used the markers to decorate it even more. The top photo shows the outside of the box, the middle photo shows the inside of the box and the bottom photo (right above this paragraph) shows the box at an angle.

It took us less than 1 hour to make her Valentine’s Day Card Collection Box and she really loves it! She is going to put all of the cards that she receives this year into her keepsake box. She’s 6 1/2 years old and I think she did a great job!

Kids Crafts: Valentine's Day Cards

The following day she decided that she wanted to make a Valentine’s Day card for her mom, so she used some of the leftover craft supplies from the day before to make that. I did NOT give her any design ideas…I think it’s important to let kids be creative and let them come up with their own designs, even if we think it looks ridiculous. Way too often I cruise around these blogs and see immaculately made craft projects from 5 year old’s? Yeah, right! Anyway, I think she did a great job at making that Valentine’s Day card for her mom!

That’s a great Valentine box! We used to decorate shoe boxes in school to collect Valentines. I bet my nephews will do something like this at school, too.

  2. A very nice set of craft supplies and I like how you used them to make such a pretty keepsake box. I know how special it is for kids to be able to look through their cards over and over. I find it is so fun to do these types of crafts with my grandkids. Didn’t always have the time when my own kids were little. Guess that’s what grandparents are for.

Your granddaughter did a wonderful job of decorating the inside and outside of her box. I think it is great that she decided to make one for her mom too.

  4. Boy does this bring back memories. I loved making Valentine’s Day cards as a child. I love doing crafts and would probably really enjoy making cards as an adult I should give it a try. I miss those days when we used to exchange cards in grade school that was fun.

  5. I ripped out an ad from the March Parent’s mag this morning that would make a good Valentine’s Day card. It has a plain and peanut M&M in an Easter basket with a chocolate bunny staring at them, wide-eyed and somewhat crazed looking, as they sometimes look. One M&M says to the other “This guy is giving me the willies.” You could attach a package of M&Ms to the card you make, or a chocolate bunny–whichever is less creepy to you!
