If you ask most people in this world if they love to clean…the majority will answer no. However, I’m completely different and enjoy cleaning my home! Matter of fact, I take great pride in keeping a clean & organized home and love when guests enter my home and pay compliments to me.
Here are some of my favorite natural cleaning methods to get my microwave sparkling clean and smelling fabulous!
5 Tips on How You Can Naturally Clean Your Microwave Oven
1. Take your carousel out of the microwave and hand wash it or toss it into the dishwasher. Once it is out of your microwave, spritz a non-toxic all-purpose natural cleaner inside. I like to use Simple Green. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then wipe it out with a clean damp sponge. Spritz your microwave again with some water and then clean up that water with a damp sponge and towel dry.
2. If you’ve still have some icky stuff inside your microwave, fill up a 2 cup glass measuring cup with 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1 3/4 cup of hot tap water. Place it into the microwave and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes. You want it to work up a good steam. Remove it (carefully as it will be hot) and finish wiping down the inside of your microwave. This always works well for me and leaves my microwave smelling citrus-ly clean!
3. If you own one of those Mr. Clean Magic Eraser cleaning sponges, those always work well for stubborn burnt on food particles. When I use them…I first spray the inside of my microwave with a non-toxic natural cleaner and let the cleaner sit for a few minutes. I then use the Magic Eraser (dry) to scrub up & loosen those stubborn food particles. Once you are done cleaning, just wipe out the inside with a damp cloth.
4. Fill up a 2 cup glass measuring cup with 1 cup of hot tap water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Place inside and microwave on the high power setting for 3 minutes. You want a good hot steam rolling around inside the oven. Carefully remove the measuring cup and wipe out the inside with a clean cotton cloth.
5. Fill up a 2 cup glass measuring cup with 1 1/2 cups of hot tap water and add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the water, stir. Place measuring cup inside the microwave oven and cook on the high power setting for 3 full minutes. You need a good amount of steam to form. Remove measuring cup and wipe out the inside of your oven with a clean cotton cloth. The great thing about using baking soda is that it also helps to remove any funky odors from inside!

Vinegar and lemon juice are amazing things, and Magic Erasers do wonders, too. My daughter keeps up with wiping down the microwave regularly and we cover all our items even things like oatmeal or soup with at least a paper towel. You never know when something will splatter.
This reminds me that I am due to clean ours again. I like a nice and clean microwave. I am so getting one of these Mr. Clean sponges and thanks for the other great tips I had no idea about these before I read your post.
I do use several of these ideas and they work beautifully for me too. My favorite is the water and lemon juice one.
These are great ideas. In the past, I used an abrasive cleanser, and ruined a perfectly good microwave in the process. What a great idea to add natural products to water, nuke it, and let the steam do all the work of loosening up a stuck on spot. Thanks!
Great tips, and an excellent reminder that I should probably give my microwave a good cleaning. I generally wipe it down somewhat often, especially if there are splatters, so it stays pretty clean. I use vinegar instead of lemon juice, though. I like the idea of using baking soda. Thanks!
I never thought of using magic erasers thanks I have done the lemon one
I never thought of using a magic eraser.Tried lemon juice one.
I can’t believe I never thought of putting the turntable in the dishwasher! But I don’t use the dishwasher a lot, I usually just hand wash since we don’t use a lot of dishes.
these are good suggestions I was just cleaning mine yesterday, next time I trying these ideas.
How do the different hot water ingredients work? Lemon vs baking vs vinegar?
I rarely make a mess in the microwave and I don’t have to share it so I can monitor that pretty well. The key for me is to always cover my things. Still, I like the lemon/vinegar tips to freshen it up.
I have used all of these very nearly and they do work well. I am married to a man who likes to blow things up. I think I m constanty cleaning up a mess. I need to teach him how to clean the silly thing. I for sure like the natural cleaning better than they chemical, the chemical leave such an odor in them .
