5 Natural Ways to Clean Your Toilet

Natural Toilet Bowl CleanersCleaning toilets, we’ve all got to do it at some point or another. For me personally, all three of my bathrooms get cleaned twice a week. I don’t mind cleaning bathrooms and actually enjoy it until I get to the part of scrubbing the toilet bowl. It just grosses me out!

With that said, I try to avoid harsh chemical cleaners as much as possible and over the years…I’ve found a few natural cleaning products that work fantastic at getting that toilet bowl clean!

5 Natural Ways to Clean Your Toilet

1. Vinegar – white vinegar is a great all-purpose, all natural cleaning product to have around your home. It will naturally clean your toilet, disinfect it and get that bowl gleaming white!

I like to pour about a 1/8 of a cup into my toilet bowl and let it sit for about an hour. I then take my toilet scrub brush…scrub the bowl, flush and I’m done.

2. Lemon Juice – you can use bottled or fresh lemon juice to clean the bowl of your toilet. Not only does the lemon juice clean the bowl…but your bathroom will smell refreshed too!

I like to pour about 1/8 of a cup into my bowl and let it sit for about an hour. I then use my toilet scrub brush, scrub the bowl and flush. I also keep lemon juice mixed with water in a spray bottle and will use that to wipe down the seat and lid.

3. Baking Soda – got stains in your bowl? Try scrubbing those stains with a little bit of baking soda and your scrub brush. While I haven’t found this to be effective with extreme staining…I have found it effective to remove minor toilet bowl stains.

4. Tea Tree Oil – is a natural disinfectant. If you want to naturally kill germs in your bowl…add 2 tbsp. of tea tree oil in your bowl and let it sit for an hour or two. Once done…use your scrub brush (if your bowl needs a good cleaning) or just flush.

5. Super Washing Soda – this is a product that I buy from Arm & Hammer that acts as a natural water softener. It will help to dissolve hard water stains in your toilet bowl. Sprinkle it into the toilet and scrub away your hard water stains.

Final Tip – Make sure you regularly clean your toilet scrub brush or replace it frequently! You can spray it with a natural disinfectant or simply purchase a new one every 2 months from your local dollar discount store (not eco-friendly but if you’re not going to clean & disinfect your brush…it’s the next best way to stop the spread of germs).

All good tips! I like to use a combination of baking soda and peroxide, but mainly I find myself using white vinegar. It has SO many other uses, too. Ugh, my brother’s toilet (the whole bathroom!) is a mess – I go over it with white vinegar all the time.

  6. I haven’t bought toilet bowl cleaner in years and prefer the natural methods. I’ll have to try the Super Washing Soda. I don’t mind cleaning mine since I’m the only who that uses it but cleaning after others, yes I agree, gross!

  7. I usually use the baking soda method to cleaan the toilet. I hve to be super careful becuse of thee pets. Yes, if the lid is up thee dog will goo in there! I am always mindful off leaving the lids down but when people come over or people forget it doesnt aalways work. I cant use chemicals I am always afraid of the stuff hurting the dog. I hadnt thought of tea tree oil just beecause of the oil and water combo.

  8. I love reading your posts Shelly, I always learn something. I love the tip about lemon juice and also tea tree oil I never knew that before I read your post. We have a septic tank so we are always mindful of what chemicals and products we use. I love a clean bathroom and hate cleaning the toilet too but at least I know if I clean it then it is Super Clean! lol – Have a nice weekend.
