On Friday, January 22nd, the blizzard of 2016 finally arrived (the outer bands of the storm) around 3 PM here in Pennsylvania. From that time on…the snow got heavier and heavier.
Originally they were predicting 12″ to 16″ of snow for my area here in central Pennsylvania…matter of fact, we were still hearing those amounts at 10 PM Friday night when we went to bed.
Sometime during the night…things changed and they didn’t change for the better! When we woke up at 6 AM on Saturday morning we already had at least 6″ on the ground and the main part of the storm still needed to arrive.
All throughout the day we watched as the snow piled up and the winds kicked up. At times the wind would guest to around 25 MPH but thankfully, it wasn’t sustained winds like they had down south.
It finally quit snowing Saturday night around 10:30 PM and we were ready to do the happy dance! However, the winds were still howling and we knew we would have some major issues to deal with tomorrow. Yeah, you know…snow clean-up!
In our backyard we measured a whopping 35 1/2″ of snow! We had no snow on the ground and this was our first snowfall of the season. There are some areas in our backyard where there are snowdrifts that measure over 45″ deep! Oh my!
Needless to say, we all survived the 2016 Blizzard and the winter storm named Jonas. We’ve been doing snow removal for days now and not sure where to put it all. Thankfully, no more snow is in the forecast for at least the next week.
For my “almost” Wordless Wednesday post for this week, I thought I would share a few photos with all of you from the storm and afterwards.
Yes, Jonas was quite a storm.. We had drifts of snow over 3 feet and the howling wind did not help, but our town is good with clearing the streets and neighbors helped me with my driveway.
Are you aware that one cannot comment on any of the posts made by Carol?
Jonas was crazy! I live in Cynthiana, KY, & we got about 8″–but just North of us they only got about 2 or 3″ and south of us, in Pulaski Co., KY, where my family lives, they got about 19″!! And the original forecast was for the opposite! The Southern areas thought they would get less, lol. I’m so done with Winter!
It was definitely one CRAZY storm! I hope we don’t see any more blizzards for at least 10 years. We are still digging out in parts of our area.
Such great pictures! I’m so glad you didn’t get horrible winds. I can’t believe you had that much snow!!! The kids look like they’re having a ball!
WOW! That’s a lot of snow! I must say, I ma a little jealous! We barely got an inch here in Northern Kentucky! My kids would have loved all that snow!
It was very scary at times. We lost our power for a little bit along with phone service. There are places in our yard where the snow was waist deep due to the snow drifting. We did prepare ahead and stocked up on food, water, snacks (in case we lost power), got out extra blankets, flashlights, lanterns and all of that stuff. It would of been nice if our weathermen were MORE accurate. There is a BIG difference between 12-16″ of snow compared to over 35″ that we got.
Up until that storm…we had NO measurable snow for the season and it had been mild up until then. I guess Mother Nature made up for lost time. Ugh
Holey Moley that’s a LOT of snow! We’ve had 26.3 inches here in Denver, but that’s the total for the whole season so far. We were having 60 degrees while you had your storm.
I am glad to hear you survived and managed. I can’t imagine that much snow! Crazy to say the least. I hope you were all home and together and won’t have too much trouble with cleanup. It looks so pretty, but I know it will soon be a gray, mess. I hope your granddaughter had fun in it. How are you feeling? Does the cold bother you even more? I know my daughter has trouble when the wind picks up. Hope you are doing well and don’t have any more snow.
Cripess we get storms like that maybe 3 or 4 times a year… hopefully the temps are rising and the snow is dissappearing. Around here, is the snowplows end up piling it up and sometimes if there is way too much it getss dumped in the river. Our big concern is weight on roofs and power outages especially in the rural areas.
It looks like you had your share!
Oh, we are forcast to get 16+ inches on Thursday or so…. it does keep you busy!
Oh, my! You did get hammered; I was wondering how you’d fare. My spouse was flying back to Maine from Colorado on Friday and his connection was in Philadelphia. Although it was snowing when his flight took off on Friday evening, he did make it out. Lucky! Up here in Downeast Maine, we didn’t see a flake from this storm, but I well understand how overwhelming that much snow can be. Good luck!
Thank you so much for sharing these pictures with us. That is amazing! I am so glad you and your family are all alright. That is scary snow! I would be worried about the roof on the house with all of that weight on it. Hope you didn’t lose power and hope you have a wood stove. We had a big snow storm in December and we were snowed in for days with no power and no phone that was scary! Makes me wonder how the early settlers made it, boy they were super tough!
