Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe

Homemade Hot Cocoa RecipeNow that the weather has definitely turned a lot colder…I find myself drinking more hot beverages and one of my favorites is a good mug of homemade hot cocoa. I have to admit…I rarely buy the store-bought versions as I just don’t like all of the junk that they put in it. I’m the old-fashioned type and prefer the homemade!

When I make homemade hot cocoa this is the recipe that I primarily use. It will make 4-5 servings, depending on the size of your mugs!

Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup hot water
4 cups milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
miniature marshmallows

In a medium saucepan combine together the granulated sugar and cocoa powder. Pour in the hot water. Over low to medium heat bring mixture to a gentle boil, continually stirring. Simmer for 2 minutes, reduce heat to low. Stir in the milk and the vanilla extract and simmer on low for 1 additional minute, stirring constantly. Do not boil or it will scorch! Remove from heat and pour into mugs. Stir in miniature marshmallows if desired.

  1. I love hot cocoa in the winter, thanks for sharing this recipe.

  2. I will make this. I’ve never made homemade hot chocolate before. I think I might try it with stevia first though as I’m trying to cut down on the sugar..

This recipe looks easy and has to be better for you than those packets of chemicals! I just wish it would get cold here so I could enjoy some!

  4. The recipe sounds simple and delicious! I’ve never made homemade hot cocoa but would love to try this in the future.

  5. I confess to keeping the store-bought stuff in the pantry. Some of the premium brands are actually pretty good, but they’re also really expensive. Next time the hot cocoa craving hits, I’m going to try your recipe for homemade. Thanks for sharing your recipe. P.S.: Love your owl mug!

I don’t usually like hot drinks, but cocoa is the exception. When it gets cold outside–which it is finally starting to do–hot cocoa can be just perfect!

  10. This sounds delicious!! I love homemade hot chocolate! Do you think this could be put in the crockpot? Either way, I think I’ll make this for my boys!

  11. I like this recipe way better than all the pre-mixed cocoa drinks. Although the weather hasn’t really gotten very cold yet (72 degrees in NYC here on Christmas Eve!!!!!!), I can be sure it’s coming, We always get clobberred with snow blizzards in February – and this will be perfect for those icy days when I’m staying indoors!

I prefer to make my own hot cocoa too. I find the commercial varieties to be too sweet and often there are additives. thanks for the recipe.

  13. I don’t care for all the stuff they put in the instant cocoa mix either. I prefer using cocoa powder too and like to keep a dry mix on hand. I’ll be putting some crushed peppermint candy cane in mine tomorrow.
