7 Essentials for a Good Night’s Rest While Traveling

December 9, 2015 by Shelly

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sleep Inn® by Choice Hotels®. All opinions are 100% mine.

Sleep Inn - State College Pennsylvania

My husband and I do a lot of traveling for both business and pleasure. When we travel we know how important it is to get a good night’s rest before heading out the next day. Let’s face it…none of us function well on 2-3 hours of slumber-time and worse yet…if our body aches from not resting well, our entire day will be miserable.

Here are the Essentials for a Good Night’s Rest While Traveling:

1. Comfortable & Supportive Mattress – This is crucial and key to getting the slumber time that you need. If it’s a broken down mattress with lumps, bumps and things poking at you…well, you’ll toss and turn all night. We all need a great mattress so that we rest for at least 8 hours before starting our day.

2. Bed Linens – These are often over-looked by travelers. I want freshly laundered linens on my hotel bed that are soft and slightly over-sized. I also prefer them in pleasing & soothing colors. I want to feel like a baby in a soft baby blanket when I go to bed at night. How about you?

3. Pillows, Pillows and Pillows – I want ample pillows on my bed. In addition to that, I often call the front desk and ask for more and those need to be made available to travelers who need additional ones. There is nothing worse when the hotel desk tells you that no additional pillows are available. In addition, I want those pillows to be plump, supportive and smelling good!

4. Proper Lighting – I like to lay in bed and relax before drifting off to lala land. I like the lighting to be soft in my rest area but yet bright enough so that I can read a book while relaxing. In addition, I don’t want to get out of bed to adjust lighting or turn it off when I’m ready to snooze. I want it to be within my reach.

5. Quiet – I can’t tell you how many times we have traveled and had to call the front desk to complain about noise after 11pm. Seriously, more times than I care to admit! People need to be respectful of other travelers for sure and keep the noise down after a certain hour. I look for hotels that are quiet or ones that I know will quickly handle a noise problem if one should occur.

6. Proper Temperature – Many travelers don’t think about the temperature of their room until well…there’s a problem! I always ask (and never assume) that we will have individual room temperature controls in our room.

7. Comfortable Clothing – Okay, this one really doesn’t have to do with the hotel, motel or inn that you may be staying at but it’s important too! When you want a good night’s rest…it’s important to pack comfortable clothing to lounge in. I tend to pack my finest when we hit the road!

Now…I want to tell you about one of my personal favorite hotels and it’s the Sleep Inn® by Choice Hotels®. I’ve been staying at Choice Hotels for about 4 years now and love them! They really understand how important it is for a traveler to get a good night’s rest! Not only that, there are thousands of locations across the nation, so we always find one that’s convenient to where we are going.

Their hotels are designed with you in mind! They offer cozy beds, beautiful room decor, soothing lighting, modern furnishings and extra pillows if you need them! On top of that, their free amenities like wifi, complimentary breakfast, coffee/tea in your room and friendly service make them our top choice when traveling.

When you travel…what kind of things do you feel are essential for a good night’s rest? I would love to hear your thoughts!

I agree with all your tips and find it important for,the hotel to have a very helpful staff. I also like a big breakfast.

I take ear plugs since I don’t like to fall asleep to noise (headphones). I’m usually too tired though and don’t have trouble falling asleep. When I drive alone, I tend to go nonstop so I’m dead tired when I stop for the night. I’ve read some horror stories about bad hotels so try to check them out online first to see how they’re rated.

We dont travel much but for me resting well means you can adjust the heat or cold. I caant sleep if its freezing and they dont put enough blankets out. Maybe I stay in too cheap of motels ha! Now I am deathly afraid of bedbugs. I dont even like the thought of being in a hotel or motel,

When I travel I always pick a Hotel that looks and is Clean. Nice clean linens and a room that sparkles! That will relax me right away! To me this is the most important!! Noise is second! I need peace and quiet to fall asleep!! After all I am not in the Hospital where Peace and Quiet doesn’t exist! Ugh! We have never slept in a Sleep in by Choice Hotels.. I will try them though.. You saved me a lot of time by knowing a Hotel that is so Welcoming in everyway! Thankyou!

Oh…I check out our rooms from top to bottom and side to side. I look under the beds, in the beds, in drawers and I scour the bathroom. I once refused a room b/c I saw a nasty cobweb from a spider in the corner of one room. We refused a room a few weeks ago b/c it had a MOLDY (yes, a MOLDY) donut half-eaten underneath the bed. Gross!

Dirty rooms do NOT fly with me.

We take headphones with us when we travel. Too many times we have had noisy hallways or ended up next to a high school band trip.

Boy, I want to travel with you. Reading this post was like reading my mind when it comes to traveling and staying at a hotel. I must have tons of extra pillows too. I have to have a pillow for my head, one to wrap my arms around, one for between my knees and I also really like one behind my back. I also want a fan for the white noise. I have gotten way, way, way too used to having a fan in my bedroom and it has to be a certain brand and wattage (well the one at homes does). I like that you mentioned lighting too. My eyes are super sensitive and I hate those new fluorescent looking bulbs they give me a headache. I also use a lot of towels and always have to ask for more to be sent up. I am super paranoid of bed bugs so I always do a full inspection of the entire room, mattress and box spring before I even think about unpacking. Great post thanks for sharing this one.

You can travel with me Heather! I love to travel. We’ve been traveling a lot this past year for my other job. Sometimes it’s an overnight trip, a weekend trip and a few have been week long trips. Some how, I’ve been managing to keep up here on the blog!
