About 2 weeks ago the family visited a local festival that was held on a farm. Yes…a real working farm! The kids got to go on a hayride, pick pumpkins, pet baby cows, pigs, goats and horses. They had a real blast!
On the particular day that we visited they had a master pumpkin carver there teaching us how to carve pumpkins like a pro. We are talking about going BEYOND the classic jack-o-lantern and carving up a real fancy design!
We got free lessons and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the best tools for pumpkin carving are tools that you buy at your arts & crafts store that are for those who work with clay. Yes…clay! Those metal tools that the clay artists use to cut and scoop out the clay when they are working. The master pumpkin carver told us to avoid the knife!
How many of you go out and buy pumpkins to add to your fall decorating? Once you buy them…do you carve them into any fancy designs or just do the typical jack-o-lantern face? Check out the designs that he was making! Oh my gosh…beautiful and very awe-inspiring!
Next year I’m going to be prepared and get some of those clay artist tools and try my hand at carving a beautiful pumpkin! My husband is a traditional pumpkin carver and uses tools from a kit that he purchased off of Amazon. It came with the tools and some cute stencils. What do you use?

I think that carving a pumpkin into a JackOLantern using clay tools is a wonderful idea. I wish I could have seen that carver at the farm.
Very fancy pumpkins. I wish I could carve that well. These look great!
I don’t risk cutting myself and haven’t carved a pumpkin. Safer to draw a face on one! That is good news and certainly safer to invest in a few artist’s tools if I do want to carve one though. I like looking online at the talented carvers so will leave it up to them!
Oh, I know my limitations, lol. I could never do something this amazing with a pumpkin. I do like to paint faces on the pumpkins, but my carving skils don’t go beyond the eyes, nose & mouth!
We carve pumpkins to make faces with the grandkids but that is about the extent of it. The designs on the pumpkins in your photo is so beyond anything I could even imagine doing. Interesting that they use clay tools. I have never thought of using anything besides a knife.
I cant carve a pumpkin well to sve my life. I love the master carvers creations. I have seen some prety fancy carvings and they are amaazing. I havent carved one in years.
I like the pineapple pumpkin. I usually get unusual pumpkins that look good without carving.
I have seen some of the fancy carvings, they are awesome. Yes, I will definitely be getting some of those clay artist tools so I can try my hand at carving a beautiful pumpkin Thank you for sharing this post.
Wonderful, thanks for the tip. This year kids are big (they want to think so) and we are going to carve our first pumpkin. Wish us luck.
Amazing! I love the idea of turning the pumpkin on its side and using the stem as the nose. I love the look of pumpkins and gourds, and if we get one, I prefer to leave it uncut and enjoy it in all of its natural glory.
I never ever thought to use art supplies to carve the pumpkin that is super smart. I am always amazed at the creativity and skill that some people have. These pumpkins are so cool looking and like nothing I have seen before. We usually just do the easy nice face or the traditional triangle eyes. Hope you and your family have a very nice Halloween.
