It is PetSafe Collar Safety Awareness Week

My German Shepherds Blue and Ginger are my furbabies. I love them as if they were my own children. I have many friends who also have pets who they dearly love as part of their family. We will go above and beyond to see to it that our pets receive the best nutrition, vet care, and more that we can possibly can. Of course, many of us want to ensure their safety as well. One thing I recently learned was that a collar can easily become a safety hazard. This is why I was so relieved to have been sent a KeepSafe Break-Away Collar from PetSafe for review.

Blue has always been a playful dog, but as he has gotten older, he’s gotten a bit slower, like the rest of us. His temperament has been significantly calmer within the past seven years. That is, until we adopted six month old Ginger several months ago. As with any typical puppy, she is extremely energetic and is always bouncing around, getting him to play with her. In play, they are mouthing at each other’s throats and paw at each other’s faces. I have tried to distract them with balls or other toys because I was worried they would poke an eye out or something. It wasn’t until learning about the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar that I learned how dangerous their previous collars could be.

Collar related accidents are more common than expected. 26,000 collar-related accidents occur each year – an average of 71 a day! That’s too many injuries and possibly deaths that can be easily prevented.

Most collar accidents happen when multiple dogs are playing at home, at the dog park, or in doggie daycare or when the collar gets stuck on a fence, deck, crate, kennel, vent, bush, or tree. This is something I have always been concerned with, but didn’t know there was this kind of solution until I found KeepSafe.

The KeepSafe® Break-Away Collar has a patented break-away safety buckle that releases when pressure is applied. If a dog’s collar gets stuck on something and starts to choke, the buckle releases and the collar falls off harmlessly.

Although I am happy to have found something that helps protect my beloved animals from harm, it’s quite unfortunate how the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar came about. It was invented by Tenney Mudge after the tragic loss of her amazing dog Chinook.

The KeepSafe Break-Away Collar attaches to a leash easily with the fabulous double D rings, which are strong, thick, heavy-duty metal (perfect for Blue’s jerks away from the sidewalk and toward the neighbors’ trees; Ginger’s attempts to chase birds) that allow the override of the breakaway buckle for walks. Plus, the collar’s nylon strap seems like it will last for a very long time. Well worth the very good price, it’s available in sizes extra small, small, medium, large, and extra large in four lovely colors.

PetSafe® brand is launching the first annual Collar Safety Awareness Week, October 18-24, as part of National Animal Safety and Protection Month.

I know many pet parents would do nearly anything for their pets. I am thrilled to have been sent the KeepSafe Break-Away Collar from PetSafe. I am extremely glad to have learned about the possibility of a strangulation situation before we learned it the hard way.
