A few weeks ago I wrote a post on Building a First Aid Kit and included some items that you should carry in your car at all times. I have been involved in multiple car accidents and, unfortunately, know the ropes pretty well, so it is important to be prepared.
The other night, my hubby and I were out for a drive in the late evening and happened upon a very bad head-on collision. I was once again reminded of the importance of that kit and blanket as we stopped to render first aid and comfort to one of the victims. Thank goodness we were prepared as we were in the country and it took emergency services quite a while to get there.
One thing that did strike me is that while my hubby is trained in first aid and CPR, I am not. It is something that I think about doing but I have not done it yet. After witnessing yet another accident, I think the time has come. My son has even had training, so I need to get on it!
Thankfully, we have a local Red Cross office here that give classes so I am looking into that asap. It is scary to me to not be prepared for situations like that. You never know when you may need to use CPR or render First Aid. I would hate to feel helpless if someone was suffering.
Are you trained in First Aid and/or CPR? Do you take refresher courses and have you ever had to use your training?
I hope the people involved in this last accident are okay. I would like to think that any bit of comfort helped the young girl we were with. It is a scary situation for sure!

I was trained in First Aid and CPR but it was so many years ago that I think I should take e refresher course.
My son is trained in CPR and first aid, but I have not trained in years. I know there have been changes. I agree that it is a good idea to get the training And have thought about doing it.

Wow…how amazing and brave you are to help. I am glad you are prepared and thankful for you reminder about CPR. I am not certified. I’ve been meaning to for a long time, but keep putting it off. It is very important, and you never know when you will need it.
It is definitely important to know some first aid! In 7th grade, we learned CPR. Later that year, I came home to find my Mom unconscious, having had heart failure, not breathing. I don’t think she would be alive today if we hadn’t known CPR.
Holy smokes, Tamra! Thank goodness for that!!! Amazing
Unfortunately the survival rate of people who need and receive CPR outside the hospital is an appalling 2%. It is good to know how to do it and would be ethically untenable if the opportunity arose and you did not try to help, but there you have it. But basic first aid is something we all need to know and it truly can benefit in an emergency.
I have taken several first aid and CPR classes in the past but it has been years so I am a bit rusty. This is a good reminder to get out there and refresh my skills especially since I do care for my grandchildren on a regular basis.
I’ve been in healthcare since the 80s so CPR certified and refreshed yearly! My last refresher was done by an excellent instructor that I really enjoyed, so look around for good ones. They even have discounts but make sure you get in-person training, and not just online because it makes a difference.
My very first person I used CPR on was already expired unfortunately. I was an EMT student on a ride-along with paramedics and did it in front of his family–so nervous–but you do all you can until it’s clear nothing else can be done. CPR has changed over the years so look into getting the training!
