Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb Book Review

When it comes to books about crime and thrillers, there is none better than the books by J.D. Robb. I have been a fan of the In Death series for many years and while I cannot say I have read all 41 of the books, I have enjoyed many of them. Just released is her newest offering and one I was excited to get review.

When Lieutenant Eve Dallas examines a body in a downtown Manhattan alleyway, the victim’s injuries are so extensive that she almost misses the clue. Carved into the skin is the shape of a heart—and initials inside reading E and D . . .

Ella-Loo and her boyfriend, Darryl, had been separated while Darryl was a guest of the state of Oklahoma, and now that his sentence has been served they don’t ever intend to part again. Ella-Loo’s got dreams. And Darryl believes there are better ways to achieve your dreams than working for them. So they hit the road, and when their car breaks down in Arkansas, they make plans to take someone else’s. Then things get messy and they wind up killing someone—an experience that stokes a fierce, wild desire in Ella-Loo. A desire for Darryl. And a desire to kill again.

As they cross state lines on their way to New York to find the life they think they deserve, they will leave a trail of evil behind them. But now they’ve landed in the jurisdiction of Lieutenant Dallas and her team at the New York Police and Security Department. And with her husband, Roarke, at her side, she has every intention of hunting them down and giving them what they truly deserve . . .

My ThoughtsCrafting a good book is an art really. There are many factors that must be included and one of the things that makes this series so good is the fact that you already know who your main characters are. LT Eve, her hubby Roarke – who is so swoon worthy, and her fellow sidekicks come together in a futuristic setting and solve terrible crimes.

In this release, Eve is definitely in the picture along with her main sidekick, Peabody, as they work to find the team of killers that have been winding their way across the country and ended up in New York. The interesting part is you meet the killers in the beginning of the story and then work with Eve and her crew as she brilliantly figures out who they are in a city of millions.

I love how the author develops the story and keeps your interest level high. If you have read other books in this series, you not only know Eve as a police Lieutenant, but you know her husband, who usually helps think out the crimes and keeps her happy as the stable, strong, and loving man that is perfect for her. The story line usually includes some of their personal life so you get to know everything about Eve.

This book, however, is mainly about the police procedures and the solving of the crime. That is not a bad thing as that portion is very interesting too. I love how Eve’s mind thinks. She is very adept at thinking like the murderers and is brilliant at solving her cases. I have never read a boring story by this author and this one is no exception.

J.D. Robb is a excellent craftsman when it comes to developing her stories. I have enjoyed all of the In Death books I have picked up and this one, while lacking a bit of the personal aspects we are used to seeing and some of the normal cast of characters, kept me entertained and guessing throughout. Well done.
