Eat Like the Locals in Montego Bay, Jamaica

August 3, 2015 by Shelly

One of the most anticipated experiences when traveling to the Caribbean is sampling the local cuisine. In Montego Bay, Jamaica, there are many locations that offer local favorites and other culinary delights. While some may be close to lodging such as the Emerald View Resort Villa, other dining locations may be worth the travel within the city.

Eat Like the Locals in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Scotchies

Scotchies not only provides some of the best jerk cuisine in Jamaica, but it also delivers a natural and rustic atmosphere. Thatched roofs, grass umbrellas and wooden seating give this location a unique experience when dining in Montego Bay. Jerked chicken, pork and many other foods are available in this popular location. This is also the site of the original Scotchies before it became a popular small chain of restaurants.

The Houseboat Grill

When dining in Montego Bay, few places have the unique aesthetics as the Houseboat Grill. Safely moored in the fish sanctuary of Montego Bay, this restaurant sets visitors above the calm waters while dining. Although this location provides excellent Caribbean cuisine, it also has an evolving menu meaning that each trip to this restaurant may deliver a new meal and experience.

Pier One

For those that enjoy a view of the Caribbean Sea, Pier One delivers dining along the shore while providing cuisine with island flavor. This fun establishment offers great dining, entertainment and is one of the more popular locations in the area. Karaoke, parties and festivals all center around this restaurant on a regular basis. At Pier One, you can easily immerse yourself in the culture.

White Witch

Not only can you sample great Caribbean cuisine at the White Witch, but you can also tee-up and play a round of golf at the same location. The course provides avid golfers an amazing round as the crystal blue waters of the sea augment the experience whether you’re on the course or sitting at a table. You can even take something away from the locale aside from memories by visiting the boutique.

Juici Patties

When it comes to Jamaican fast food, Juici Patties delivers a quick and easy method to sample Caribbean cuisine such as curried chicken and potatoes. Instead of using traditional buns, many of the meals prepared at this restaurant use a coco bread roll giving the burgers and other sandwiches a unique taste. As this is part of a large Jamaican island-chain, you can fine one of these places in many different areas.

Pork Pit

The Pork Pit Bar and Grill stands across the way from Walter Fletcher Beach and delivers a taste of the local aesthetics as well as cuisine. Although the establishment may not have the most alluring appearance, the food cooked on the open pit ranks high with locals and visitors alike. It’s location also puts it near some of the other attractions of Montego Bay giving the Pork Pit an ideal locale for those exploring the city. The jerked meats cooked here are spiced according to the tastes of residents which may be too much for some visitors to handle.

These are only a few of the finer dining experiences that are near several Montego Bay hotels. The city has a large number of fine eateries ranging from traditional Caribbean to foreign fast food chains. When traveling to Jamaica, you’re appetite can be easily satisfied.

I have never traveled to Montego Bat and would love to go,there some day. I shall have to bookmark this post for, future reference. I’d like the Houseboat Grill for finer dining and JuicimPatties for local fare.

These sound great. The Pork Pit or Scotchies sound like places I would love, with Jamaican jerk food!

All of those sound so good. I think I would like the Pork Pit and jerked meat meals. I am not sure I will be going there but it makes me want to.
