A dazzling debut novel about taking chances, finding hope, and learning to stand up for your dreams…
Everyone in Wheeler, New Mexico, thinks Joanna leads the perfect life: the quiet, contented housewife of a dashing deputy sheriff, raising a beautiful young daughter, Laurel. But Joanna’s reality is nothing like her facade. Behind closed doors, she lives in constant fear of her husband. She’s been trapped for so long, escape seems impossible—until a stranger offers her the help she needs to flee….
On the run, Joanna and Laurel stumble upon the small town of Morro, a charming and magical village that seems to exist out of time and place. There a farmer and his wife offer her sanctuary, and soon, between the comfort of her new home and blossoming friendships, Joanna’s soul begins to heal, easing the wounds of a decade of abuse.
But her past—and her husband—aren’t so easy to escape. Unwilling to live in fear any longer, Joanna must summon a strength she never knew she had to fight back and forge a new life for her daughter and herself….
My Thoughts: Like I said in my opening, this book really changed and impacted me. It will be hard to tell you much without giving away the plot, but let me say that what you think this story is about is soooo Not what this story is about.
This new author has an amazing ability to tell a haunting story that is full of foreshadowing and your perception of the truth may come out being a bit skewed. This book takes you through the life of abuse into freedom, but the journey is like none other you have read before.
Don’t be afraid of the topic in this book but know that you will feel it all – heartbreak, powerlessness, confusion, anger, whimsy, celebration, happiness. This book is an easy read that will give you ups and downs, but you will come out feeling peaceful and wondering if you really know what happens in life, as we know it.
I am not one to give 5 stars typically, but this book made an impression on me. That is what I look for when reviewing a book. For a first time novelist, I was amazed at the uniqueness of the story and detail. Definitely one to pickup!

This book sounds like a very powerful read that would move me on many levels. It just might be too, intense for me. I shall think about reading it.
I’ll be on the lookout for this in my local library. Thanks for the review.
Your glowing recommendation and synopsis really get me wanting to read this book. I wouldn’t typically go for it, but, like you said, it will make us throw all our preconceived ideas out the window. I want to know the truth of the story because often people think they know us but don’t.
I am so looking forward to reading this based on your description. Sounds like a powerful, well written book.
I normally would not read a book with such a heavy subject matter, but you make it sound so great I think I would definitely give it a read. Thank you for sharing this review.
This sounds very interesting, but not sure I want to read it….some of the storyline seems to be parelleling experiences that I have gone through. It might be too intense for me to read now. Maybe in a few years….
