Monograms: The Original Branding Tools

June 2, 2015 by Shelly

Here’s to the monogram! Throughout the years, the monogram has been used not only as a decorative piece of distinction, but as an early method of branding. Both royalty and the average person have used it to help identify a piece of property or an item; moreover, so it continues to be used to this day.

Not everyone knows where to have them done or really what they are, so let us help you with this.

The Many Faces Of A Monogram

Hand-woven, knitted or simply engraved, a true monogram consists of two or three letters intertwined, overlapping or combined together in some form to create one motif symbol. First appearing engraved on Greek coins around 350 B.C., they have been a favorite means to identity a relation of some sort to a higher authority or a membership in some guild or trade group.

Today’s Monogram Environment

Today, the monogram’s popularity has not lessened to any extent; however, finding someone to create one in today’s technology-driven environment is not easy. Monograms, in essence, remain a work of art to many people.

Fortunately, the dynamics and ease that the Internet brings has made it simpler and more convenient for buyers to find styles and designs of their liking. With a simple click of a computer mouse, a choice of specially designed monograms appear.

Stationary

Most commonly used on corporate stationary and wedding invitations, the design arrangement is usually determined by the number of initials and the item being monogrammed. One, two or even three initials are commonly used. Corporate stationary, however, may also have a logo on its design as well as a monogram.

Luggage And Clothing

Today’s fashion design firms, such as Louis Vuitton and Givenchy, are most noted for using branded monograms on all their items, hence, the term “designer” merchandise. Custom shirts, handkerchiefs, scarves and intimate apparel many times carry hand-stitched monograms on the items themselves.

Typically found on designer handbags and pieces of luggage, monograms are generally attached to the bags by adhesive tape or handle tags and are more easily lost with vigorous handling.

Common Uses Today

Many times, parents resort to monograms of a less expensive nature to help identify their children’s personal belongings such as lunch bags and a pair of sneakers. Traditional baby clothes and baby gift items also bear their owner’s brand from an early age. Jewelry pieces are other traditional recipients of engraved monograms.

In essence, monograms are found anywhere there is something to be identified as belonging to someone else. They are always vogue and never out of season. Furthermore, we can still look forward to having them around for a long time to come.

I enjoyed this piece from the history to the uses. Monograms are popping up everywhere from glassware to sheets to labels and purses. And they have options for all ages from baby to adults. You can get them done in script or block or…. possibilities go on. I hadn’t looked at them so in-depth before.

I Enjoy having some items monogrammed, but not everything. I think the monogram work best on a plainer background. I Los don’t like to wear something with the designer’s monogram on it.

I love monograms! Except when something I buy has the designer’s monogram all over it. If I’m going to wear a monogram, it’s going to be own. Know what I mean? I don’t want to pay for the privelege of being a walking advertisement!
