I have never been much of a collector until I got older. Now it seems that I collect things I really don’t need anymore. Especially when it comes to my office, the one space I want to be peaceful and calming. The only things I love to collect is my Flow Blue china and pictures. But try telling that to all of the books and papers that creep up on you. My hubby on the other hand, he is always a work in progress with tools and stuff he “might” need. It doesn’t take long to add up! Don’t even ask about my kid… Teens are terrible with Stuff!
Decluttering is something I try and work on several times a year. There are many great reasons to have a streamlined and organized home. Decluttering can save you time and money, plus let you breathe easier too! Here is why.
Declutter, Save Money and Breathe Easier
Organized Spaces
One thing I hate more than anything is looking for something that I need. When something has a home, that is where it should be found all the time. I hate wasting time looking for an item that belongs somewhere else. Having organized spaces really helps you save time and patience!
Decluttering Saves Money
By having your items organized and streamlined, you are able to find what you are looking for so no need to buy replacements. Plus, reigning in the collection purchases also will reduce the amount of money you spend. And you can sell the excess for some cash or gift it to those that would appreciate the items.
Reduce Cleaning
Clutter and stacks creates more to clean and that means more time cleaning. I am not a clean freak but I enjoy a clean and organized home. So any way I can reduce the amount of time cleaning and have it look nice is a great thing to me!
Love for Your Items
We collect things for a reason and by deculttering, we can really come to grips with what we love and admire versus what we don’t like as much. Choosing to keep only those items we love will mean more to us in the long run. Choose favorite pieces to display and store or sell the rest. A few times a year, switch them out or move them to different places in the house to enjoy there. Only bring in new items if you have somewhere for it to go and you choose to get rid of something else.
More Mental Clarity
It has been shown that the more stuff that clutters your room, the more your mind is cluttered too. Maybe that is where the zen and holistic spaces come in. Freeing your rooms of clutter will free your mind to think and work more easily.
This is a work in progress for me. I find the older I get the less stuff I want around me.

We have gotten older and I want to declutter. The problem lies in when we do, almost right after we needed something we have just gotten riid of. I wish we could just get rid of everything some days…
I have started deluttering because we have too much junk. I am trying to do a little at a time and it does make a difference in space, time and money.
Whenever I do some organizing, I always find something tucked away that I totally forgot I had. It really does help to save money because then I am not going out buying stuff I already have.
I love it when it is decluttered, but have a hard time letting things go!!! somethings in my mind I haven’t used in a while, but is actually many many years! The results are worth it, so I keep chipping away at it. Right now I have some things tht belong to other people, and I can’t get them to take it, I was looking up responsibilities for unclaimed property. pain in the neck
Oh, boy, I think everybody has ‘that room.’ usually it’s a spare bedroom or something & it is piled up with STUFF! lolol. You know, stuff you don’t want to throw away but have no space for. Hey, it works, until you expect company!
I totally agree! We downsized last year to a house about half the size of the old one and are still trying to pare down our junk.
Our spare room needs a serious overhaul we need to do come decluttering in there thanks for sharing this one I motivated me.
I think ARC has me on speed dial. I donate to them just about every month. I try to do the ‘one in, one out’ rule (doesn’t always work). But I do have more stuff than I need.
This is a major problem here. The three os us are verging on being hoarders, just unable to throw anything away. We live in an apartment, so there is no garage, or basement or attic to store things in. I think it’s almost gotten to the point where we are going to have to hire a professional to help with de-cluttering. And I agree 100% with you when you say there’s direct connection between physical and mental clutter. OMG!
Around here, paper clutter is the biggest problem. We just can’t seem to get a handle on it, and it really weights heavily on me. I totally agree with your point about mental clarity and how it’s affected by clutter.
You make excellent points. Decluttering is a hassle but very worth it. It helps you to get on top of paperwork and makes cleaning easier. Plus, it does get you to really think about the things you collect and give them proper space to be admired. Just hard to get started, but you feel so good when your space is back nice and neat.
Amen on the reduced cleaning time. I live near a freeway in L.A. and constantly battle the dust. I love your decluttering posts and they motivate me every time. This morning I picked up a hand cart I had purchased online at Lowe’s (with a great gift card I won!) and can’t wait to use it to cart my clutter out of my apartment! Next week they have free disposal of electronics and I am hoping to get rid of an old fashioned TV (yes those big ones that weigh a ton!) I am on a decluttering mission this summer, that’s for sure.
