I don’t know about you, but at least once a year and sometimes twice, I go through the closets and drawers and clean out clothing that is no longer worn. I also clean out unused home decor, linens and kitchen items too. It is amazing how fast things accumulate! While donating the items is the fastest way to get rid of the items, sometimes I want to make some cash from it too. Here are three different ways that I use, depending on the item.
3 Ways to Sell Unwanted Items and Make Money
Yard or Garage Sales – Where I live, these are very popular. Some people hold them once a month as a way to earn income! They are a great way to earn some fast cash if you do a bit of work too. Make sure the items are priced right and marked. Plus do some advertising to bring in the crowds. I always have a plan for the items that do not sell so they do not stay in the garage adding more clutter!
Facebook and Craigslist – There are tons of groups on Facebook that offer an online yard sale of sorts. You can request to join and add a few items via photo and description. Depending on the item and where you live, Craigslist may work too. Always meet people in a public place to exchange money and the item whenever possible!
Consignment Shops – I used to sell a lot of items at my local consignment shop, but they closed. These type of shops are a great choice for name brand items you want to get a bit more money for. The downside is you will lose a percentage to the shop and you have to wait for the money. However, if you have a lot of products, this may be a option for ongoing income.

I never would have thought about Facebook for yard sales and groups. I have used online consignment types like Thred Up to sale clothes and have thought about several others. There are swaps to look into, too. It may not help you, but it could be just what someone else is needing.
We got our dog and our car from CraigsList, but I have yet to sell anything using it. I’m about ready, though. I’ve got a ton of stuff I need to divest myself of. Thanks for this post–it might just be the nudge I needed.
These are good ways to save and / or make money. You can also, sell items on EBay. I give a lot of clothes away to charity.
Craigslist is a good option for me. Thanks for reminding us to meet in a public place. While most people who swap/buy/sell on Craigslist are on the up and up, there ARE those who are predators.
We donate a lot and sell some things on eBay.
I love your posts like this one that center on saving money and I look forward to reading them. Have a nice weekend.
