Time-Saving Kitchen and Household Must-Haves

May 12, 2015 by Classystaff

* This Post is brought to you by Ziploc*

Cooking for the family is something I usually enjoy doing. But with our crazy schedules between my jobs and my son’s job and school, it seems like I am forever cooking too much food lately. Plus with my juicing on a regular basis and buying meats in bulk to break down, I am food prepping a lot too.

There are some things in the kitchen that we all must have to make meal prep and even leftovers a bit easier to deal with. When I am preparing my veggies and fruits for juicing, zip bags seem to be the easiest way to store them. It is so simple to grab and blend. It really takes away any excuse I may have for not wanting to prepare my juice.

Saving money goes a long way when I buy my meats in bulk and break them down into manageable meal size portions. Easy to defrost and easy to store! Plus some types of my leftovers are usually found in a zip bag.

Ziploc Freezer and Storage Bags

If you are like me, then you probably have all different sizes and types of zip bags in your house. They are perfect for storing foods, art supplies, small toy pieces, and who knows what else. I love them in the freezer because I can smash the meat flat and it stores so much easier and defrosts more quickly too.

Now the folks from Ziploc brand Storage Bags have made their zip bags even better! Available in a variety of sizes and with an easy-to-grip and open ergonomic tab, Ziploc® Easy Open Tabs help manage the clutter, prepare meals and more.

Ziploc Freezer and Storage Bags

Recently launched, the bags are available in freezer, storage, sandwich and snack varieties:

* Ziploc® brand Storage bags with Easy Open Tabs: Feature a pink-colored tab and are available in quart, half-gallon and gallon sizes.

* Ziploc® brand Freezer bags with Easy Open Tabs: Feature a blue-colored tab and are available in pint, quart and gallon sizes.

* Ziploc® brand Sandwich and Snack bags with Easy Open Tabs: Feature a green-colored tab and sandwich bags are available in standard and extra-large sizes

Ziploc Easy Open Tabs blue

I love the cut in tabs so you can easily grip the bag and open it in a flash. Gone are the days of fumbling to find the opening. The size range is great for all of your storage needs and I love the color coded bags so you can find the right size without reading the box. Cool!

I’ve only tried the green ones so far, but wanted to tell others how much I like them, and why.
The primary reason is that they (at least the green ones for sure) are *extremely* easy to close. These don’t require the pinch strength and thumb joint flexibility of a healthy 30 year old male, so perfect for everyone else outside that narrow range from kids to older adults to those with hand problems or other disabilities, or just any-age male or female. (They’re great “for moms/parents” too, but they would only be a small slice of the potential market.)

I also like the taller tab on one side of each bag which helps to grab and pull it open. The tabs don’t have to be fiddled with to feel/see/pull, and don’t require glasses to see like ordinary tabs (or even eyes, so good for the blind).

I’ve used a number of slider type ziptop baggies of various brands for ease of opening (though actually some of the brands aren’t all that easy to open), but always feel guilty at using that extra piece of plastic and they’re a little bulkier to store, etc.

I haven’t yet used the green ones for *liquidy foods that would get banged around a lot*, but they’ve worked well so far for liquidy foods in normal use and everything else I’ve used them for (separating screws/office supplies/etc, crafts, freezing chicken stock, dinner leftovers, wet washcloth hot packs, etc).

One small thing I would like would be paler or more toned-down colors for the tabs. They’re okay now and having colors is good for quickly seeing the sizes of the bags (in the freezer, etc) and good for customizing the separation of other supplies, but I don’t want the tab colors to overwhelm the contents of the bags at first glance or to have a number of bags in the freezer or craft box look like a circus. (Also some people who don’t like the colors that have been chosen would be happier with paler versions.)

I’ve noticed some reviewers on another site saying the bags are hard to open (really?), but they mostly seem to have purchased them in bulk at Sams/Costco and also in larger sizes than I’ve tried, so those could be different. Am anxious to try all the other sizes though because of the good things I’ve experienced with them so far, especially the ease of opening.

I always over-cook (like doubling recipes or making the biggest turkey, etc.) so I’ll have leftovers for quick heating. I use ziploc freezer bags to freeze everything. I do individual portions in the smaller bags and put those in a gallon size bag, date it, identify it and it’s all organized and ready to go.
