Keeping a Home Functional

May 22, 2015 by Shelly

Landscape Designing and Home Decor- Creating Beautiful SpacesKeeping a home looking great and functioning well can be challenging to homeowners. There may always seem like there is one more project to do or one more item to address. Fortunately, homeowners can take steps to stay ahead of any potential problems.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance Visits

To say that it is a pain to have an air conditioner or heater fixed when it is needed most is an understatement. Finding a professional who can take care of a problem during an emergency can be very expensive. Besides this, parts for a unit can be hard to get when there are many similar requests from others. Instead, a great way to begin is to schedule a licensed professional to stop by and look at a heating or cooling unit in the off-season. A professional knows what to look for, and he or she is able to ensure that a unit is working efficiently. If there is an issue that needs to be addressed with ducted air conditioning or another part of a unit, a technician can take care of the problem quickly. Furthermore, remember that it usually costs less to do preventative maintenance as compared to waiting until a problem arises.

Purchase Extras for Later

It can be easy to forget to purchase that one last item at a store. Driving back to a store to get that item can be a pain. This is true if a store is five minutes or fifty miles away. A good way to combat this is to purchase items before they run out. Instead of waiting until the paper towels are almost gone, purchase a second set. The additional set can be put in storage or a place that will be out of the way. When the first set of paper towels is gone, all that needs to be done is to take out the additional set from storage. Next, place paper towels on a shopping list to be purchased on the next trip. When this is done, it can prevent a household from running out to the store for just one item or having to wait until the next paycheck arrives.

A functional home can be priceless. Homeowners may feel less stress as a result of knowing that their heating and cooling units work well and household items are in stock. This knowledge can provide peace of mind.

I Always try to keep extras on hand and make a note to buy the item or items in My next shopping trip. I have scheduled some preventive Montenegro visit, but not enough.

I definitely agree with purchasing extras. I would even add that you should buy extras of big items like paint (that way you know you can match that wall, indoors or out, when you need to) or shingles or upholstering materials. That way, when you spill something & ruin that chair, you don’t have to wonder if they can make it match the other 5 or if those shingles that the storm blew off can be replaced.

I try to have an ongoing shopping list that we add to as items get low and dinner ideas for the week so that we can limit our store visits. I hate having to go to the store during the afternoon rush as it can be so crowded and take so long.

Living in a rural area, I find that having a stock of household items is necessary for keeping our household functional. Makes me feel a bit like a hoarder, but it sure makes life easier to have things on hand.

Homekeeping is truly an art. No matter how long you have been doing it, there is always something to learn and some way to be more organized.
