FOLLOW ME BACK by A. Meredith Walters
I am usually not one to read overly dark stories or ones filled with too much angst and drama. I have enough of that in my own life LOL. So when I pick up a book that is telling you up front what to expect, I go in with some trepidation. However, in this case, I was pleasantly surprised when what I thought I was walking into with this review turned out to be not what the author gave me.
Follow Me Back by A. Meredith Walters
Series: Twisted Love
Publisher: Gallery Books (June 2, 2015)
ISBN-13: 978-1476774169
The sequel to Lead Me Not, this dangerously sexy second installment in the Twisted Love series continues Aubrey and Maxx’s love story, from New York Times bestselling author A. Meredith Walters—who “writes the most beautifully flawed characters that still have you swooning” (Sawyer Bennett, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Off series).
Aubrey Duncan has loved…and lost. Should she follow a heart that’s betrayed her or a head that tells her to let go?
Maxx Demelo’s addiction almost destroyed him. It ruined his life and, most importantly, his relationship with the only girl he ever loved.
He has vowed to become the man Aubrey Duncan deserves. Even if he has to tear himself apart to do it. So he enters rehab, trying to fix the parts of him that are shattered as he longs to be healthy and whole.
Aubrey lost everything because she chose to listen to her heart. Now she has sworn to put herself first, to heal in the only way that she can…far away from Maxx and his demons.
But just as Aubrey is starting over, Maxx is released from rehab and thrust back into her world, determined to prove how much they still need each other. And the chaos that had defined them threatens to unleash once again…
But a heart, no matter how broken, is impossible to ignore

My Thoughts: I have read some pretty dark and twisted books in my time so when I read the teaser for this new release, I was prepared mentally for that. But what the author gave us is a real look into the heartbreak and drama of addiction and those that live and love through it.
This book is the second in a series and I while have not read the first installment, I really did not need to to be able to know exactly what happened prior. The author had included a lot of the issues and storyline for you to know what the first book entailed. It would have been good to have read it, but I did not feel overly lost at all.
This is definitely a love story at best. While I was expecting a dark story, it was not what I consider dark at all. The addiction that Maxx was fighting both to drugs and to the woman he loved came through loud and clear. The author made him strong with renewed dedication to the one he loved. Winning Aubry back was his foremost goal. I really felt good for Maxx and what he was working towards and found myself cheering him on.
Aubry became strong as well. It made her look into herself to see what she had lost and what she had found. True love is meant to be and should win against all odds.
This book was well written and while it had the potential to be full of drama and issues, I did not feel it was over the top like other books I have read. Dealing with addiction is not pretty but when there is a burning will and a way to true love, it is nice to find the one who makes it all worthwhile and the happy ever after.
