History of Zombies in Pop Culture

April 25, 2015 by Shelly

From today’s top video games to the shows that make you binge-watch, there’s a common theme, and it involves the undead. While it seems zombies have taken over the world only recently, in actuality, these slow-moving, flesh-eating monsters have been prevalent in pop culture for quite some time. How do you spot one though, and what do you do when one approaches? What’s the best way to arm yourself against a member of the undead? Regardless of how many zombie shows and movies you’ve seen or how many books you’ve read cover to cover, there’s always something more to learn about these nasty nightwalkers. The infographic below offers a brief history of zombie culture around the world as well as some key tips on what to do if one of these brain-eating baddies comes for you.

This was so much fun to read! I shared it with my husband because he’s a zombie fanatic. (And Shaun of the Dead is one of our favorite movies.) 🙂 Thanks for sharing!!

I have to admit I am a fan of The Walking Dead although not so much for the zombies as the story line and how peoople would interact and survive in a world without rules or order. I know some who really believe in zombies but I really dont.

I am not a huge fan of zombie movies, but I do like the comedies like Shaun of the Dead. Thank you for sharing this great infographic.

For a long time (thanks to the “Twilight” franchise), the “in” monster was the vampire. Well, we all got over-saturated with Edward Cullen & friends, so on to zombies. My personal favorite is the 1968 “Night of the Living Dead: – as the meme says, “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!”. Made on a really low budget in Pittsburgh, it was (in retrospect) notable in that the lead actor was black, yet not a word was mentioned of that. What I mean is, he played a man, not a black man. Others movies of the era concentrated on racial differences – think of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” Okay, this week’s Film Lecture is over, students! They’ll be a pop quiz on Monday!

The only time I find zombies interesting is at Halloween. However, I know a lot,of people who can not watch enough programs about or containing them. this is a cute Infographic.

Zombies and vampires! Both intrigue us and people cannot get enough of them! I am a vampire person myself but enjoy the zombie genre almost as much!

I think it’s a fun theme at Halloween but other than that I’m not into them. I guess they’re a fun distraction from whatever reality you’re dealing with at the moment.

This is great. I have friends that are really into zombies, from the shows to apparel. I will have to pass this on. Zombies really have become a genre on their own and “taken” over.
