How to Make Your Own Glitter Nail Polish

April 20, 2015 by Shelly

How to Make Your Own Glitter Nail PolishLast month we hosted a Birthday party for my niece who was turning thirteen. This party consisted of 7 girls plus my niece for a fun sleepover at her mother’s house. Just like most teen girls, they are into bath, body and beauty products and have a lot of fun experimenting with products and developing their own unique looks.

My sister asked me to make some Birthday Party Favors that would thrill some 13 & 14 year old girls and one of the things that I made for all of them was some cute bottles of nail polish. Here is how I made them.

DIY – Glitter Nail Polish

Clear Nail Polish (we got our’s at the Dollar General Store)
Cosmetic Grade Glitter (we purchased it online and selected their school colors of black and white)
Cosmetic Funnel (also purchased online but you can use whatever you have on-hand)

Working with glitter is messy. Lay down some newspaper before you get started. Open up the clear nail polish bottles and use the funnel to put a little glitter of each different color into the bottle. You don’t need a lot of glitter and I would recommend not mixing more than 3 colors into one bottle. Place the lid back on top and shake them vigorously to disperse the glitter evenly through.

Once done, you can decorate the bottles with some satin ribbon and metal charms that are available at your local craft store. We also printed out little sticker labels using the computer and put those on the bottles. We bought cellophane party bags at the Dollar General Store and also picked up some nail files, toe separators and nail clippers there too and made each girl their very own manicure & pedicure pack.

All of the girls really loved these Birthday party favors which are perfect for any teenage girl. Super quick & easy to make up and affordable too!

This could be such fun. I am having a “girls” day and this would be fun to do with my favorite girls.

This is such a fun idea! My daughter loves painting her nails so it would be a treat if she could pick out her favorite glitter for her own nail polish. 🙂

There are a ton of sites online and some shops over on Etsy that sell cosmetic grade glitter. It’s not very expensive and a tiny bit goes a very long way. We found it to NOT be too messy because we used a little metal cosmetic funnel to put it into each bottle. Just a sprinkle of each color (glitter) is all you need. Because you are putting it in clear polish, it serves as your top & base coat.

Another tip. I am NOT fond of opaque nail colors so I will often use a clear top coat with some glitter sprinkled into the bottle as my top coat over an opaque color to jazz it up!

My nieces do this, and they love making the different colors for school colors and different holidays. It is messy as can be, byt looks so pretty.

I love DIY esp for cosmetics or beauty items – how cool! I can imagine so many different ideas – I’d like to try this! It would be fun to do with teens or tweens!

This is really cool! I especially love that you did it in the school colors! I guess you could also do in it in the colors of your favorite college sports team, too!

Love this idea! Can’t believe my daughter and I never thought of it. This is a really great way to make your own custom colors. Want to show off team spirit for the game or have orange glitter for Halloween, now you can. You don’t have to buy a whole bottle that may go to waste. Plus, this is a fun idea for a girls’ day.

I always have a bunch of glitter to clean up when I wear a glitter tee shirts but love the bling. I’m not much for glitter nails though. I bet teens love it, just a bit messy.
