American flags are typically purchased to show loyalty to the United States of America. They are proudly displayed in schoolyards, parks, and yards across America as a sign of freedom. It is odd, then, that so many American flags aren’t even made in the United States.
Many Americans noticed this fact and decided that an American flag just isn’t American unless it is American-made. Many businesses sprung up around this simple but patriotic concept and now offer not just American flags but a host of patriotic flags to show loyalty to the United States. The sheer number of flag types is astounding and inspirational to the millions of Americans who insist on buying “Made in America” flags only.
Remembrance and Religious
Many flags are made for religious or memorial purposes. These flags may not be the current version of the American flag but may instead be an earlier version that represents the time-period it is memorializing. Civil war flags might be purchased by a family that wants to remember their fallen brethren who died way back in the Civil War. They want to ensure that this flag is also American-made. Patriotism is celebrated in all eras of United States history and memorial and remembrance flags help to remind people that freedom was won, not given.
Service Flags
The service flags help to memorialize the heroes that are here with us today. They might not be active military, but they are the police and fire forces that keep our civilians safe at home. These flags are also an important part of the patriotic spirit that pervades these flag stores.
American Flags Made in America
These American-made flags have grown in popularity over the years as people have demanded a higher standard of patriotism from their businesses. No matter what kind of flag someone wants to buy, the patriotic store owners believe that American flags should be made in America and sold here to Americans that appreciate the freedom they enjoy today. Flags should always be of the highest quality and represent the quality and pride that goes into American-made goods.
Additional information about the product should be prominently displayed so that customers have an idea of what material the flag is made out of, and it should be verified that it really was made and distributed in the United States of America. Patriotic customers who choose to shop at American-made only stores need that additional reassurance to know that their purchase is worthwhile.

Anyone purchasing an American flag should check to see that it is made in the USA. Many people would just assume that since it is an American flag that it is made in the USA, I used to. Thank you for sharing this post.
Honestly, I wasn’t surprised to hear many flags are not made here. I was more surprised to hear there are still some made here, which is a sad commentary on how things are, I guess. It’s all about money to so many companies…if they think it’s cheaper to make American flags in China, they don’t hesitate!
I so agree. This is so obviously the right thing to do to honor our heroes.
Great post! I am always amazed to hear that American flags aren’t even made in America usually.
ABC News had a nice story in 2011 (Made in America series) about Annin Flagmakers that runs its largest factory in Coshocton, Ohio (my home state) and makes 50,000 flags a day (in 2011), The flag they raised at Ground Zero after 9/11 was an Annin flag. I couldn’t be more proud.
I couldn’t believe when this story first came out. American flags made elsewhere???? It just didn’t make sense or seem right to me. I know lots of our products are made other places, but I believe the flag should be respected and made in USA. Thank you for your post.
I agree that an American flag that is made in China or any other country is ridiculous, since you want to show your patriotism when you display the flag
