I grew up in Minnesota where winter is a big deal. Winter there is a love/hate relationship that anyone who lives in the northern areas can relate with well. You learn to embrace it rather quickly or move to a warmer climate. Cold weather never stopped us when we we wanted to go out and built snowman, make snow angels, have a snowball fight or just play.
When I lived there, we always participated in some sort of winter sports. It didn’t matter to us if it was cold out, we just dressed for the sport and went. I loved to ice skate and went to the ice skating pond as often as I could and would skate for hours. My brother played hockey there too and my mom, my sister and I would go to watch him play.
Sledding was another favorite of mine and there was a fabulous hill just up the street that was perfect for sledding. We would spend hours and hours there. I even sledded down the street one day on my way home from the hill and smashed into a parked car. Luckily I went under it, for the most part! LOL Such fun!
Another one of my favorite activities was riding the snowmobiles. While I was too young at the time to drive one myself, I would go ride as often as I could get my uncle or dad to take me. Even as an adult, when I had a chance to visit in the winter, my brother made sure he brought his snowmobiles up so I could ride. I even showed my hubby how it’s done… Minnesota style. He was a bit hesitant at first. HA! But he soon caught on.
I know a lot of people that love winter sports. Skiing or snowboarding is a favorite in California, but you do have to travel between 2-4 hours to find good snow and with our weather, it has not been great the past few years.
Do you have a favorite winter sport activity that you enjoy? While I understand shoveling can be considered an activity, I do not think that it is a sport necessarily! LOL Share with us your favorite winter sport. Ahhh to be young again!

My favorite winter activity when I was a kid was to spend hours skating after school and on weekends. Seemed like the whole town was there, both kids and adults.
I am in Iowa,,, and although we have almost as much sbow as MN snow has never been my thing. I mean I think skating os OK but maybe the closest winter sport would be ice fishing?
Years ago, I used to cross-country ski, but I never really enjoyed going out on trails or skiing with other people. My favorite thing about it was that on my skis, I could get out into the woods into places I could never have gotten to on foot, and it was a pretty quiet way of moving so I had a good chance to see wildlife. Nowadays my favorite winter sport is watching the water fowl out on the bay through a spotting scope from the warm comfort of my living room window.
Oh, when I was a kid I loved playing in the snow, sledding, and of course, NO SCHOOL! But now, please bring on Spring! My joints can’t handle the cold!
When I was young I enjoyed skiing, ice skating and sledding, but I have not done them in years. I would love to try riding a snowmobile.
When I was younger I really enjoyed Ice Skating it was my Favorite winter sport. I would go to the Pond everyday and ice skate. I was pretty good at it.. Now a Days I don’t see any ponds or outside rinks to ice skate on. The children around here need a place to ice skate.. So much fun. Thankyou for bringing back so many wonderful memories. I think I will send a suggestion to town hall about a rink for the kids to ice skate on.. :0)~~
When I was a kid I loved to ice skate an toboggan! Now that I live in Florida I miss winter sports. I replaced them with cycling with kayaking and hitting the beach! Now a bad trade off.
Spring is not in the air this weekend: 8-12 inches of snow. I used to go tubing and tried skiing for a few years. Now I stay in where it’s warm.
I grew up in Winterpeg and we had freezing weather and lots of snow 5 months out of the year. Where I live now I am lucky to see it snow a few days out of the year and usually just a dusting that melts soon after. It’s hard to believe but I do really miss the snow and cold. I guess it just reminds me of home. I do love the fresh and alive feeling it gives you and the beauty of it all. I love playing hockey, ringette and ice skating. And no matter what age, tobogganing was always so much fun. I enjoyed reading your post 🙂 It brought back good memories. Thanks!
What a wonderful experience for you growing up and to get to share it with your husband! My son always loved snow skiing and would go to Colorado when he could. What a difference living in Minnesota would be. I live in the midwest, and we get enough snow for some skiing, sledding, and snowmen. I always loved making snow angels. My daughter was one to carve out forts. So many activities to enjoy.
I can’t say that I have a favorite winter sport. I have been skiing a few times honestly I hate being cold. I can handle snow for a few days and then I want it to be gone. We sure need more of it this year where I live though.
