A Little Game on DVD for Family Movie Night
Family movie night is a great way to spend time together, especially in the cold winter months when you are not outside as much as you want to be. Finding good movies for everyone to enjoy can sometimes be tough, but coming out on January 20, is a new movie that is just right for the whole family.
Synopsis: Ostracized at her posh new uptown school and shaken by the death of her beloved grandmother, a 10 year-old downtown girl finds an unlikely mentor in the form of an irascible Chessmaster, who uses the game to teach Max lessons in resilience, perseverance, and how to embrace inevitable change.
My Thoughts: A Little Game is a sweet movie about a young and intelligent girl named Max whose world is going through some changes. A new (and expensive) school, and a bully too, come with it. Her parents, played by Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid) and Janeane Garofalo (Ratatouille, “West Wing”), are out working so hard and yet still struggling to pay for her tuition. Unfortunate things like this and more happen to dear Max, but such is the way of Life.
Max begins to learn about Life much better when she’s takes an interest in playing Chess. As bright as Max is, it’s quite funny to me how bad she could be with metaphors, since she is very logical and literal. She meets Norman, played by F. Murray Abraham (“Homeland”, Amadeus) the grumpy mentor. I’m not comfortable with the fact that she went up to a stranger. Although I love how she admits that she shouldn’t talk to strangers, something any 10 year old would do.
I must admit that I admire Max’s character. She’s tough, tenacious, and the complete city kid because she can take care of herself to a certain degree. Norman sees that also, and decides to teach her. I absolutely loved how he taught her how to play Chess, not the basic listing of the pieces, but applying it towards Life.
This film is rated PG, I believe good for most audiences. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My niece and nephew seemed to have liked it also. It had many humorous moments, along with some sentimental moments. It is well worth watching, I recommend this cute film. A Little Game has several life experiences worth thinking about.
