Blooming Christmas Cactus

December 30, 2014 by Classystaff

I love Christmas time. Not only is it a wonderful time for family, friends and holiday celebrations, it is also cold enough to force my Christmas cactus to bloom. It is a wonder to me how the plant knows that it is time to bloom. What is built into its DNA that encourages it to be on time for the holiday season? Whatever it is I love seeing it bloom. This was originally a cutting from my grandmothers plant and I have had it for years and years. I swiped a cutting from my moms plant and hand carried it home from Minnesota one year, so needless to say, I treasure it!

Christmas Cactus in Bloom

Have any of you grown a Christmas Cactus before? If so, how is that plant doing now? Got any growing tips to share with me?

Your Christmas cactus looks very beautiful. I have 2 in different windows of the house and they bloom at different times, one closer to Thanksgiving and the other closer to Christmas. Plants can be amazing.,

Wow! It’s beautiful! It’s amazing how plants, animals…they just know when to do things. Four o’clocks blooming at a certain time of day or the weather with other plants. Enjoy the beauty.

So pretty! My mother in-law had a Christmas cactus too. It’s so cool how they “just know”. Thanks for posting this!

I like this one! Years ago, I had a neighbor who had a rare cactus that only bloomed on rare occasions. She cared for it for years, hoping it would bloom. Several years after her death, her husband called me over one day & showed me the cactus: BLOOMING!!

You have a pink one too! I brought mine in when we kept getting frost warnings months ago and mine bloomed in October~ it’s timing wasnt quite right. I have a pink one from hubbys Grandmorther and one with white blooms from his Aunt. Mine bloomed i think due to coming from outside since I normally let them spend the summer and fall out there along with a HUGE aleo that wont die no matter what I do to it.

Lovely! I had 2 plants that had lived in spite of me for the past 20 years that were blown off the porch while we were on vacation this year! They have beautiful blooms – thanks for sharing yours!
