Teaching Your Baby Sign Language

Teaching Your Baby Sign Language Kit

About BabySignLanguage

BabySignLanguage is a project for parents teaching infants and toddlers early communication skills. BabySignLanguage believes that early communication sets the foundation for accelerated learning, reduced frustration, and a closer relationship between parent and child. Their website contains baby sign language resources designed around the pedagogical needs of infants and toddlers. The sign was founded by Mey Lau, Lila Retnasaba, and Brooke Parker when they started teaching their children how to sign. BabySignLanguage is constantly evolving. They want to be a resource for every parent who wants to start communicating with their preverbal child through sign language.

Baby Sign Language Standard Kit

This kit bundles together everything you need to get started with signing in one box. The standard kit includes the following: A baby sign language guidebook; a baby sign language dictionary; flash cards; and a wall chart. The guidebook will show you how to teach your child how to sign. The dictionary contains over 600 signs including the most common words, alphabet and numbers, and helps you expand your child’s vocabulary. The flash cards allow you to teach words that your child is not exposed to in everyday life. The face of the flash cards shows the word and image for the child, and the back of the flash cards show how the sign is performed (a great reminder for the parent/adult). The wall chart includes 22 basic signs and makes a handy reminder for caregivers, and covers basic signs, like eat, drink, and sleep.

Thoughts about Baby Sign Language Standard Kit

Although I do not have a child of my own, I was really excited to receive my very own Baby Sign Language Kit. I cannot wait to put it to use. In the meantime, this kit will teach me basic sign language that I’ll be able to share when I have a children. I love the official reference dictionary. It shows words in sign language and breaks them up by the letters of the alphabet. For example, under the letter “S”, you will find the sign language for sleep, stinky, stop, etc. I am a children’s librarian, and we teach our students the “word of the day” in Spanish and sign language. The reference dictionary will help me learn the sign language before my program as well as refresh my memory if I forget.

Also included in the kit are flash cards. These cards have the picture and word on one side, and the sign language and word on the other side. You can use these cards to quiz yourself OR your child when they are able to speak. Having the ability to use sign language while growing up is a huge asset. I plan to continue to teach my child sign language as they grow.

A third item in the baby sign language kit is a comprehensive teaching guide. This guide proves very useful and provides tips and tricks on how to teach your child basic sign language skills. In the beginning of the guide is an overview of each chapter. I think it’s very important to read the guide before teaching your child, because it gives great instruction and ideas.

I absolutely love the basic baby sign language kit, and you will too. Know someone expecting? Need ideas for Christmas? Then look no further than this kit. You won’t be disappointed. Head on over to BabySignLanguage and take a look around to learn more.

I think that this is a wonderful idea and the more languages including sign language a baby knows the better acculturated the child can be. I also love how that baby can learn this and communicate before he or she starts talking.

  2. This is definitely something I would try, thank you for sharing this review. I think this would be a great gift for people with children, and I also think it’s great for people who do not have children but are interested in learning sign language. Thank you for sharing this review.

  3. What a great product and I know a friend who would love this for her 2 month old (well, a little later). From her pics she has such a personality already and would probably do well with this.

  4. I have heard about this before and I would love to have one of these kits for a friend of mine. I think this is a super neat thing to teach little ones thanks for sharing.

  5. I am a big proponent of teaching sign language. It is so helpful as they develop their language skills.
