Encouraging a Lifelong Love of Music in Your Child

October 2, 2014 by Shelly

luthier built guitarMusic lessons can greatly enrich your child’s life and help him to perform better in school. Music lessons have been known to enhance self-esteem and instill a sense of confidence that is unparalleled by any other activity. Knowing what age to start music lessons is key in helping your child enjoy music for life.

Music for Young Children

Young children have brains that are primed for learning, and are at a stage of intense discovery. Young children are most likely to pick up new concepts quickly, and many parents start music lessons when children are younger than six. Experts recommend starting lessons early, but caution that formal lessons are not necessary for toddlers and pre-schoolers. Simply exposing them to a musical environment is enough to create the pathways necessary for music appreciation.

Sing to your young child, listen to music with them and give them small instruments like egg shakers, drums and triangles in order to encourage a love of music. There are many music classes for young babies that will introduce them to music concepts and allow him to participate in songs and dance that will develop a lifetime of music appreciation.

Music Lessons for Older Children

When your child is older, he will be able to select the instrument that he is most interested in learning. At this point, it is important to select a quality instrument that your child can use repeatedly for years to come. A Luthier built guitar, for example, will give your child years of use and allow them to grow with the instrument.

Older children may join a music program in school or take outside lessons after school. The format of the lessons don’t matter. Your child is likely to get a quality music education regardless of where he takes the lessons. The key is to find an instrument that he will enjoy playing and put structures in place that will make it easy for him to practice.

Music can do wonders for enriching your child’s life and giving him something that he can enjoy for years to come. Music lessons give your child a head start in life and help them to perform better in school. Whether you choose an instrument for your young child or let your older learner select an instrument that he loves, encouraging a love of music will give your child something that he can enjoy throughout life.

I have always enjoyed music and learned to play the piano at an early age. I believe in the importance of all the arts in a child’s education and in the ability of music to enrich one’s life and expand one’s ability to learn.

I’m 66 and my folks loved music and gave the love of music to me. I had piano lessons, then clarinet lessons and played in band. Now I sing in a chorus and have for 25 years. I love music.
