There are times when I believe I could eat nothing but vegetables and then I see a nice juicy steak or a beautiful chicken breast and give up on nothing but vegetables. But I have had the opportunity to try some of Aunt Nellie’s glassed packed vegetables and here I go again on nothing but vegetables. I really love fruits and vegetables and was privileged to sample some great tasting samples from Aunt Nellies.
I was sent a selection of their sliced and whole pickled beets, sliced beets and sweet and sour cabbage. Let me assure whoever picked this assortment for me hit the nail on the head. Pickled beets are a favorite. I like them on salads, a side to a sandwich or with dinner as a side dish, particularly when I fix German food. These beets are perfectly pickled. Not too much vinegar, not too much sugar.

I have my family over once a week for dinner and since I had these goodies I decided brats, sweet and sour red cabbage, spaetzle, hot German potato salad, and pickled beets sounded good. My family really likes it when I fix this type meal and I could get their take on the red cabbage and the beets. They all loved the pickled beets and thought the sweet and sour cabbage had great flavor. One of my sons and I think it would be better if the cabbage was a little crisper. They others said it was good as it was.
The sliced beets were wonderful. I love making a fresh orange glaze for them with a little orange zest for garnish. I was looking at Aunt Nellie’s website (auntnellies.com) and found some terrific sounding recipes. Including Beet Red Cabbage Salad, Cranberry-Beet Bundt Cake (which I can’t wait to try), Bean Tortellini and Pesto Salad and Rustic Beet Soup. There are many other tasty sounding recipes on their site.
Aunt Nellie’s fresh vegetables are jarred soon after harvesting so they are very healthy and fresh. In addition to what I reviewed, they also have Whole Holland-Style Onions and 3 Bean Salad with green, wax and kidney beans. I will look for those products in the store to try. I like that they are in a jar. Somehow they seem fresher to me–maybe it’s just me. I hope you will be as happy with these vegetables as I am. And be sure to check the website for other recipes.

First off, I want to say that I grew up in Germany and your description of family dinner made my mouth water!! That being said, another item from Aunt Nellie’s that I would like to try is the Aunt Nellie’s 3-Bean Salad! This has always been a personal favorite of mine, but since I had kids who didn’t like vinegar or kidney beans, I rarely got to have it!

I love Aunt Nellie’s Whole Holland-Style Onions and always have a jar in my pantry. In a pinch, I can add them to stew, but my favorite way to use them is in a baked creamed onions casserole. I see that Aunt Nellie’s has recipes on their website, so I’m going to browse there later to see if I can pick up some more ideas.
